The imparlance of good roads
has been again emphasized by the
ultimatum of the postoffice depart
ment to the effect that routes over
roads which ’do not come up to a
reasonable standard of excellence
will oe discontinued. There will be
some people who will not raise their
hands nor voice to have the reads
put in order, but when they are de
prived of their daily mail you will
bear a mighty howl.
Don’t be hfra id to do your duty.
A man who lias opinions of his own
and courage to advocate them, wil
l»e sure to have opposition in this
world, because he run- across or
contrary to other people’s “opinions,
but just keep straight ahead it your
cause is right and your conscience
clear. Don’t bother yourself about
what p:opie sav; life is too short
for that.
The oily life worth living is one

A Rest Room.
It the lad ee of the Bam bridge
Civic League will pardon a eugges
tion we think we can offer them oue
wh ch will not onlv be practical but
certainly humane and beneficial to
every lady visitor from the adjacent
country districts coming to town,
and that is a rest room tor their flee
use and enjoyment and that of their
children.
First let them speak ho the retail
merchants. It is to their interest
to provide a place where their coun
try customers may be comfortable
while in the city; if the wife and
children could be sure of a shelter
wherein, after the trading is done,
they might await the motions of the
husband and father, they would of.
tener accompany him to the stores,
and such is human nature, that this
would inevitably mean more trade
for the merchants. As it is,
the women customers mast choose
between crowding about in the
store, struggling fer a footnold
among all manner of other men ami
women, in the way of everybody,
and everybody m their way, or they
must sit out in the vehicles, or stand
on the sidewalks (if there are any)
or hunt a retir.-d spot in the alley
among wagons and animals, m ol
der to eat Uieir cold lunch or care
for their ehildren, If there could be
a *oom, however plainly luruisbed,
even with a few benches and small
tables, where a comfortable atmos
phere might be maintained in all
weathers, where the coffee might be
reheated, or the baby’s miik be
warmed, or where the worn out
mothe -, or the sleeping child might
find a lounge to rest on, more wo
men would be glad to get away
irom home, and enjoy the outing.
This is your work, ladies of the
league, and our merchants should
willingly help you.

The Vote and
1 he Suggestion
Some curious figures appear in the
recent primaries Joe Brown re-
ceived 109,828 votes, Hoke Smith
received 98,445 votes. Brown ma
jority was 10,383. The total vote
polled this year was 208,273.
The tctal vote two years ago was
163,96], The increase in the vote
was 44,112. That means that 44,-
3l2 more white men registered and
voted this y. ar than voted that
year. That increase iu the vote is
unprecedented, except in the mem
orable instance when Fulton county
wen. “wet” in 1S78
These figures are the most re*,
markable when it is remembered
that two years ago there were foui
strong and popular men in the race
and for a part of the time five.
There was no third party to divide
the white ^vote. Each candidate
act'vely canvassed the «taie and ex-
er.ed himself to get everyone of his
friends to the polls. The result of
that campaign M brou bt out a very
large vote, vet in the campaign just
closed the vote is 44,312 larger than
it was two year' ago.
in this election Governor Smith
received 3,948 more, votes than he
received ^two years ace. It must
seotft therefore to be a rather hsz-
ardous statement to say that Gov.
Smith’s policies have been defeated
because of a revolution in public
sentiment. The people who were
with him then, and more besides,
a»-e with him now. His defeat was
accomplished by the miraculous
performance ot inducing about fifty
thousand men who had been dodg
mg their taxes, to pay up, and reg*
ister. Some of these paid back
taxes for thirty yeai>; very many lor
five and ten years. Who furnished
the wherewith is the question we’d
like to have answered truth f ully.
There’s a big crumb of comlorl
and of hope in the suggest! n which
these disclosures furnish.

What To Do.
There is comfort in the knowledge sc
often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer’s
Swamp-Root, fhe great kidney remedy,
fulfills every wish in curing rheumatism
pain in the back, kidneys, liver, bladde:
and every part of the urinary passage.
It corrects inability to hold wate:
and scalding pain in passing it, cr ba>-
effects following use of liquor, wine o
beer, and overcomes that unpleasant ne
cessity of being compelled to go often
during the day, and to get tip many
times during tiie night. The mild and
the extraordinary effect of Swcunp-Root
is soon realized. It stands the highest
for its wonderful cures of the most dis
