While tiie legislature is consider,

biennial sessions for itselt.
Some Oregon cities celebrated
the Fourth of July during three
days. Now that is something like
it; one day to get wound up and
properly keyed; one to realty eeU>

Those girls who did not connect

Senator Wiikes of the Seventh
district introduced a bill in the ups
pe* house of the legislature last
week providing for a division ot
school money between, the whites
and blacks according to the taxes
paid by each Senator, we’re with
yon, tooth amt nail.
Maybe, after all, it would be a
good thing to let the legislature see
how’ Georgia prohibition works in
Chattanooga, and in Jacksonville as
well, since the members have seen
it in Atlanta. A New York drummer
says the only difference he could
notice in the three cities was that in
Chattanooga and Jacksonville they
leave the ’abels on, while in At
lanta they soak them off.
When Joseph ft! Brown receives
notification of his nomination to the
governorship of Georgia, h > w ill

father stood on fifty.one years ago
when he was notified ot his selection
tor the same office. The' exercises
will he held on the fawn in front of
Mr. Brown’s residence in Marietta.
Governor Smit"' recommends in
his message that the date ot the
primary for state honse officers be
fixed by statute. The recommend*,
turn is a good one. Such an irnpor'
taut matter ought cot to be left to
the control of scheming politicians.
The primary wns held oa r ly this
year, and there was much criticism
ot those who fixed the date ot it. It
i* nnnecessarv to inquire hero why
*>■0 -arlv h date wa« decided upon.
• I •' governor now seems to think
“ 0 date should be considerably
'»t - ard that it shotfld be made
permanent, an 1 in this we agree
with him.
A family in Waterbuty, Conn.,

The men who make money out «>t
ihe convict leases will be very busy
about the eapnal the next few
weeks. Tiny will have lots of
friends who will have lots ol money
to pay tor the near beer or nearly
anything else ilmi looks iik*- that it
wants to be paid for.
There are so many more important
things to talk about just now; the
blackberry season; ihe crime of aduL
(erasing ice cream; the value of beer
as a cooling beverage—anything
but politics. We can’t vote till
November Many ol us can’t vote
then. Let us have peace until the
dog ditys are gone!
We understand that a local option
plank rmght h^ve h en passed in
the state platform, but for the
wishes of Mr. Brown, who h:d
signed the pledge to ihe preachers
on the other side. Somebody says
a local option plank might have
stampeded the convention. Now,
what did the c nvention think abo .t
prohibition, anyhow?
Mr. Adams, of Chatham, is after
the money shark. He has ju-t
passed through the legislatures, bill
making it a misdemeanor lor any
person or corporation to charge
1 more than 5 per cent per month for
the loan of money. Of course, this
legalizes then any ra*e ner cen'ura
up to 60 per cent per annum on
•loans. Verily Shylock is alive

! There is talk th.it an eminent
' Georgian 1* already laving plans to
oppose Senator Bacon four years
hence. Senator Bacon is the b gs
gest man Georgi 1 has had in Wa-h^
ingt >n in many years, and the peo
ple are going to keep him the<e as
long as lie will serve them. Bacon
is a cr. dit to tSeorgta and to th<~
South.
There was nothing wrong in the
recommeudaiion of the platform o.
the recent stale convention that ali
the sinecures be cut out of the state
government. This reform is of the
genuine sort and it Senator Peld.r
is sincere in his efforts 10 this end
he deserves support and commenda-
lion. We have of eo in isted tbar

1 he Convict Problem.
Th re is another view to take ot
the convict labor problem which is
now before the state legislature for
solution. It is no’ to be denied that
by fault of oar own is this problem
on as.
Figures were given oat from At'
ianta a few days ago which show
that the state convicts represent at
least 1,000 lives taken by murder;
but in not one ot these cases was
the law administered to the lull ex
tent. In every case there was an
escape from the gallows.
Coinraeutii»4 upon the problem
presented by the state convicts the
Augusta Chronicle points out that
“<«f the 2,500 convicts m the peni
tentiary nearly half are there for
rape dml murder, for which offenses
they should have been hanged long
ago. * * * We d.serve to be

and then lead easy lives.
“No one thmg has more contrib
uted to British prosperity than Eng
land's relentless extermination of
murderers. No matter where the
crime < ecu is, in London or on the
frontiers of a foreign possession, the
c.imina , if fairly found guilty, is
strung no at <mc€.
“But we,-shame on us, hire him
out and pocket the ‘.hirty pieces of
silver!’ ”
No man, 1 o state, no nation arises
above his or its ideals.
It Can’t Be Beat.
The best of ail teachers is expe
nence. C. M. Harden, of Silver
City, Nor h Carolina, says; “I

claimed for it. For stomach, liver
an . kidney troubles it can’t be
beat. I have tried if and nod it a
most excellent medicine.” Mr
Harden is right; it’s the best of ail
medicines also lor weakness, lame
back, and *11 run down conditions.
Best too for chills and malaria.

Now that prohibition and dis*
franehis mc-nt can take a rest there*
in, the Georgia legislature i» taking
some lime to “reform” the peniten-
liary and tho chaingang atrocities.
Certainly the s’ate needs money,
but shoald it take blood money?
When fonvmts are farmed out to
sawmills and tnrpentme operators
at fabulous wages, be sure these
men will be oppressed and 'ground

Gone Forever.
Tea years ago, a Decatur county
farmer pat- his Ai rals on a dollar

Bainbridge and spent it with the
editor of this paper. Before the

Up and Boo ning.
Tell me not in mournful numbers
that the town is full of gloom, for a
man’s a crank that slnmbers in
these bustling days of boom. Life
is real, life is earnest, and the grave
is not its goal; every dollar that tL on
turne8l helps to make the old town
roll. But enjoyment and Dot sor
row is our destined end or way; if
you have no money, borrow—buy
a corner lot each day! Lives of
great men all remind us we can w.n
immortal lame. Let us leave the
thumps behind us, and we’il get
there just the same. In this wodd’-
bread battle, in the bivouac of life,
let us make the dry bones rattle—
buy a corner for'your wife! Let us
then be up and doing, with a heart
lor any fate; still achieving, still
pvrsuing, booming early, booming
late.

Let the increase of 1908 be the
greatest in our history. It can be
done only by showing the farmers
that Bambridge intends to pay them
a good price for their cotton. It is
always troublesome t<> get up a
premium price after the cotton
comes to town. We want to see
the first bale bring at least 25 ceDts

easily arrange it if they will start in
time.
