The railroads have deferred rais ing rates in the north until after the election. The Bouth is democratic anyhow, s j there are no political reasons for putting it off here. “Stand your ground comrades, gtand your ground! Three separate “opinions” of broad divergence! —Lo! whether iB right? Wouldu’t it be wisdom to wait till after the November elec tion before giving out Nucb weighty “opinions?” A Model Wife. A model wile is the woman who looks after her husband’s household and makes her hospitality a delight to him, and not a burden; one who has learned that a soft answer will turn away wrath; who keeps her sweetest smiles and most loving words for her husband; who is his confidante in sorrow or in joy aud who does not feel the necessity of explaining her private affairs to the neighborhood; who respects the rights of her hushand and children and m turn has due regard paid to her; who knows that the strongest argument is womanliness, and so she cultivates it; who is sympathetic in joy or in grief and who finds work .or hands to do; who is not made bitter by trouble, but who strengthens aud sweetens under it; and who tries to cancel the faults of her husband ratber than blazon them forth to an uninterested pub lic; the woman whose life book has love written on every page; who makes a home for a man, a home in a bouse and in a heart; a home that is lull of love presided over by one I whose price is above rubies. She is tbe model wife. If Governor IIoke Smith is disr posed to play even with some of bis political enemies, he may see an op -mng for a few telling li.-ks be fore the legislature finally adjourns. Contempt for Laws. If the seasons remain favorable for a few more days the cotton crop in this territory will be of the lumper variety. Every newspaper man who does his duty is constantly making some' h lv mad. Although this is ine* vliable, yet no true newspaper ever intentionally wounds another’s feel- mg-, or takes a step that lie does not consider necessary for the public good. And he always has the cons ' ation of knowing that tho e who condomu him today will probably praise him tomorrow, while he aiso nt.derstands that those who praise him today will probably condemn him tomorrow; also, that all will be forgotten before the final judgment sml that then the only thing that really matters is whether he was ri ght or wrong. According the Albany Herald the Savannah police modus oper* andi is delightfully simple touching blind tigers. Representat ves ot the chief of police make a round of the blind tiger joints, whose places of business are as well known as the postoffice or the leading hotel-, and require the proprietors to post cash bonds of §100 each, pending further inquiry into their “suspected” in fraction of certain municipal regu lations. In each case the £100 bond is forthcoming, to the accompani ment of a wink from tbe officer and a smile from the tiger. When tke case is called in the recorder’s court, i ot a single defendank-appears. The recorder looks surprised, forfeits the bonds and feels that he has earned, in a single i. ornmg, all that his job will pay during his term ot office. La-t Monday morning be forfeited 93 bond*, with net eturns to the municipal exchequer of §9,300. It is claimed that Chatham county juries will not convict defendants charged with violations of the pro - bibiiion law. That may or may not be trne; but if th .* police authorities are strong enough to hold up viola tor of the law aud make them pay what amounts to a license tax, they are strong enough to break up the blind tiger business altogether. How long do the Savannah authori ties suppose the blind tiger joints would last il their proprietors were to be held up for $loo once a we k iustead of two or three times a ye. ?
