Gov. Smith’s Thanksgiv ing Proclamation. Gov. Smith last week issued the following Thanksgiving proclama tion btat.fi ol Georgia. Executive Department. On the twentyisixth day of the present month the American people will join in a festival of praise and thanks to the Giver of All Good. It is a beautiful cu-tora to stop from labor, and take, in common with our fetlowscitizens of the en tire nation, a day of restUndrecrea tion, while at the same time we turn our thoughts to the Ruler ot the universe iu humble acknowledgment of our many bl°ssings. Therefore, I, Hoke Smith,Govern-, or ot Georgia, do hereby designate laws *v»gced. Laws need changing s- ‘iue'.ii.ifeij to meet changed or "ging conditions, bnt they do not i eternal tinkering and annual -~ges, which often aue merely ex- perunen tab Then why should we have annual sessions ot the legislature*? In Ala’ bama the legislature meets only once in four years, aad Alabama’s laws are about as up-to-date as our laws. By having only quadrennial sessions the people of that state escape the flood of experimental legislation from which we suffer in Georgia, not to speak.of the large saving of the taxpayers’ money. So well are the people of that state satisfiied with quadrennial sessions of the legislature that they have just voted down the proposition to have their legislatere meet, every two years. There isn’t much difference bes tween Alabama and Georgia in the legislative needs of the people. If a dose once in four years is found suf ficient for their greatest good, then a dose of the same every year is en-> tirely too much of a good thing. And tins is what we are suffering from in our state. Why should we continue to have our legislature meet every year? Butler Acquitted. Council Butler, a young white o . * [ man charged with murder and tried Thursday, the twenty-sixth day of j ast r . ce k November, 1908, as a day of thanks giving, and I urge that it be so ob» served throughout the entire slate. No life is without ns joys. The way to fiud them is to seek to see them. They can be tound by a.l who iron, the heart will sing— “Count your many blessings; Name them one by one— Count your many blessings, See what God has done.” While we seek to till our lives and the lives ol those near and dear to as with cheer, we must not lail to res member always the less fortunate. In the midst of struggle much can be added to each life by asking in the Superior Court wa acquitted. Young Butler, we understand, was ii.toxica 1 ed at the time of the kill ing—and the facts showed to the satisfaction of the jury that there was an absence of malice and soac*. acqnitted.
