Tobacco War Ended.
An agreement was reached in
LoHisville,Ky.,on Nov 18, and a con
tract signed by president of Burley
of the Tobacco Grower’s Associa
tion, and the American Tobacco
Company, whereby about 10,00o,o0o
pounds of Burley tobacco passed
from planter to manufacturer. In
this sale is included the holdings of
the crop of 190*7 as well as of the
crop of 19o9, netting the farmer
from 15 to 18 1-2 cents for his tobac.
CO; All this tobacco is to be dehv,
ered and received by. February l,and
thn transaction wiil turn loose about
$12 ,0oo,ooo in the Burley tobacco
dhtrict of Kentucky.
ThH,it is believed, will be the end
of the Kentucky tobacco war, made
famous by the night riders and their
methods w’hom ft brought forth. It
must be regarded as a victory for
the organized tobacco growers, since
it is the culmination of the most im
posing demonstration of power on
the part of an organization of farms
ers this country has ever seen,” says
the Lexington Herald.
This society succeeded in secure
ing" a pool of a large part of two
crops of the white Burley distiiet,
and caiting out a third crop. After
an understanding that it is to grow
another crop next y ar, it has dis
posed of a pool of nearly 80,000,000
pounds of tobacco, at prices nearly
double tbe prices prevailing at the
time the society was organized and
the first crop poole
For tbe first time in the history of
the tobacco growing industry in
this section ot Kentucky, the grow
er has had a voice in fixing the price
of his product. He has successfully
asserted his independence and
brought a powerful monoply to sals
isfactoay terms.
The sale means an easier money
market in that section, and better
business conditions. It means mor^
confidence as to the present and
more hope for the future.
A crop will be grown next year,
perhaps a larger crop than has ever
been grown. Will this be pooled?
The answer depends npon the re
sults of this sale to the grower. He'
will have no time to judge whether
the organization really means more
money for his labor; whether the
sale of his tobacco through the so
ciety is better for him than to sell
as an individual on the open markets
Decatur and Gadsden counties
ought also to organize for self pro
tection-leaving out the night riding
feature. If so they will get the mor
al support of their neighbors and
living prices for their cigar tobae-
ironage otherwise bestowed is likely j
to encourage non-Drogressiveuess in
merchants.
More and more tbe people are
coming to discriminate against stores
that do not advertise enterprisingly,
•ersisteutly, aggressively; for they
realize that such stores are not up**
to date, are not the sort that will
keep the city ia van of live 'places,
ot awake communities.
More this coming year tbaa ever
before will your advertising be the
test by which all else will stand or
fall— so plan it liberally, plan it on
winning lines.

Qjme Law Needed.
In order to prevent tbe extermi
nation of game in Georgia it will be
necessary for t’ e legislature to enact
laws for its protection. And it
ought to do so. The rate at which
game is disappearing in this state
indicat s that it will n.t be long
before there will be none felt. There
isn’t much now. —
The reason that the present condi
tion exists is that too many bun ere
are not satisfied with killing game in
moderation, but they go to the
length of wholesale slaughter.
Many bunt birds and other game
for the money there is in it and net
for the sport at all, and the result
is that large qaantities are slain.
There should be a limit to the bag
of the day, and when one reaches
the limit he sh >uld be compelled by
law to stop. This is r he la w iu some
of the states and its beneficial effects
h*ve been noted from the first.
Georgia should have such a law. and
must have, otherwise game in this
state soon will be gone.
The next legislature should ena> t
such a law as will insure game pro
tection.
