Unstringing The Bow.
Everybopy knows that * bow, to
preserve its elastic force, rebuires to
be unstrung at times. As early as
men learn to use the bow tb-yprob*
ably were aware of the lact and even
our boys, when they make bows for
toys, soon learn it. A bow always
st rung will seon lose its vitality.
In a way the hnman system is like
a bow. Amid modern conditions
life has become very strenuous.
From the time when cmldhood is
passed, and nnloit inately in too
many cases before, life is a perpe*
tual straggle. In every pursuit
there is keen competition. In erery
business there is a striving to reach
always a position higher np, nearer
the top. This requires effort and -
such application in this fast age
that engagement in any business
constitutes a strain. It is suing
lug the human bow to its tightest
tension.
Thu strain tells. The story told
by the longevity tibles is easy to
read. It shows that in certain avo
cations the average length of life is
much greater than in others. Why?
Not because the employments which
usually shorten life are always moral
injurious, but because they are more
strenuous. The bow is kept more
constantly under the higu tension.
Wheu the bow is unstrung regu*
larly aud allowed complete relaxa
tion it is like a new bow when
strung agaiu. It not oul> lasts
lender by such treatment, but u is
more efficient while in actual use.
All bow> must finally yield to decay,
lose ail elasticity and reach that con
dition where the grain breaks .t it is
bent; and jus: so the human system
will reach that condition wheu un
der any treatment the thread oi life
will soap. Bat like the bow, its life
may not only be prolonged but its
efficiency kept up to a. higher atand-
ard by proper treatment, which is
unstringing """
nee.
The bow i» anstrung by with
drawing the tension and allowing
the wood to return to its firmer
position. The tension of life may
be withdrawn from it in the same
manner. When business hours art-
over, the miurl which has been suung
to ns highest tensi'ie should be giv
en complete relaxation. It should
be allowed to return to its growing
or youtqtul condition. That i.s play

Speaking Of Slaves.
On a jonunev through the South

impressed by the preponderance of
