T HE recent death of Gen. Wade
Hampton, and the approaching
reunion of the Confederate Veter
an* at Dallas, Tex., brings the subject
of war between the states prominently
before the people again. Georgia took
u prominent and conspioiona part in
that hiqtorlo war. The parents of
President Jefferson Davis removed from
Wilkes county, Georgia, to Kentucky
three months before Jefferson Davis
was born.-
The secession convention of Georgia
met at Millcdgevillc, and on Jan. 10,
1861, adopted the following Ordinance
by a vote of 208 and 29 against lto
adoption: "We, ^the.pcoplh of the
state of Georgiwyiiv convention assem
bled, do declare and ordain, and it is
hereby declared and ordained, that the
■ordinances adopted by the people of
the State of Georgia in convention in
A. Douglass in 1880. He eras an able
statesman and a polished scholar.
The following are the names of those
who were members of the Confederate

Wilkes county are his b$>ther, and Col.
Oawell Gartrell of Atlanta is also his
brother.

He.stands at thebeiid of that class of
great men for which Georgia Is famous.
Stephens was the first and only vice-
president of thfe Confederate States; a
member of congress many years, and
. died governor of this state. He passed
into history as one of the foremost men
. of America. Joseph E. Brown was
governor of the state during the war.
Our state was represented in the
Confederate senate by s duty three men

Iiersehei V. Johnson; Hill ably repre
sented his state in the U. S.'senate and
had no superior as an orator. Johnson
was govern ir of his state, U. S. senator

Baker of Georgia was first auditor of
the Confederate treasury, and Philip
Clayton of Georgia Was assistant secre
tary of the treasury. Col. William M.
Brown of Georgia wqs on President
Davis’ staff.
General Thomas R. R. Cobb wrote a
digest called "Cobb’s Digest” that pro
duced a sensation in literary circles,
and It has been adopted by all the
atates in the dnion. He was killed at
Fredericksburg, Va. The Lucy Cobb
Insitute at Athens was named in honor
of his daughter.
Francis 8. Bartow, Martin J. Craw
ford, B. H. Hill and Thomas K R Cobb
were the signers of the Confederate
Constitution from Georgia. Martin J.
Crawford waa one of tho peaco commis
sioners that was sent to Washington
City to see if matters could not be
-settled wlthbut war.
Georgia furnished 04 regiments and
86 battalions. The chief battles fought
in Georgia were Chicknmauga, Resaca,
New Hope Church, Kennesaw Moun
tain, Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, Jones
boro, and mnny smaller engagements
and akirmishea. Georgia furnished
some of the bravest soldiers. that ever
went forth to battle in all the anuals of
