time ago regarding a small patch of
land and one of them bebaved ih a
most exasperating fashion while
sttlement was pending. The other
determined to get even and, after
much consideration, evolved a plan.
Next morning he sent a postal
card to his neighbor with, the'sin
gle word “town’’ on it. The date
of mailing was up in a corner.
Next tnormng a card with "old”
written in large letters was sent to
the same man. Cards with other
wprds followed, one every day for
a time. When arrpnmd in a cer

known to him. Another lawyer
was secured for the 6ther side and
when the two legal luminaries had
a consultation the sender's represen'
tative pointed out that the receiver
had put the word “ridiculous” kt
the wrong end of the message, be
cause tho* mailed first, it was dated
the day after the card having the
word “town.”
Moreover, a careful inspectidh
would ahow that after the word
••ridicu lout” was an exclamation
point and after the word “town”
was an interrogation mark, so that
the series of postal curds might be
made to read “Old Bill Jones is
meanest cuss in town? Ridiculos!”
He claimed, therefore, that instead
of alandering the plaintiff his client
had defended him from slander,

As a matter of information we
would like to know wbat part of
Abe communication referred to
above touched the tender spots of
our contemporary,, the Vienna
Progress? What principle put
forth in it that was so widely dif
ferent from the large number of
communications that we have here
tofore published about both of the
gubernatorial candidates from dif
ferent parties who used a. notn do
plume?' Why are you so anxious
foe.‘'Citizen” to come out in the
open? Do you want to engage tu
personalities ua you always have
done in “your great (?) newspaper
lights? If not, it would not be
necessary for you to know who the
real author is in order, to answer
pay argument of principle as set
forth by “Citizen.’»
The above questions ore simply
qsked for information as that par
ticular article seemed to warm our
contemporary up to the top notch.
We fcre a* ulosstoundarstand why,
U we have certainly bad some
communications touching on toe
governor's, race that we thought
were more bitter and harsh than
M»e one above referred to.

The following is some of the
things said about Dupont Guerrv
in the Walton Nfcws and Messen
ger, edited in the Terrell column:
“If Mr. Guerry would spend
half the uerva-mitscular energy he
is wanting telling the people about
the ’public iniquities,’ in telling
them some sensible remedy he has
to propose for them, they would be
better sutisfled. If he can’t give
some remedies for his evils he ought
to shuck bis long-tailed band-me-
down Albert-Edward coat arid get
out. He’s long on evils and shy
on remedies.
“Mr. Guerry continues to lambast
the democratic party, everything
and everybody, from Governor
down to baliff, and especially one
o! the candidates for Governor. A
great many people think Mr. Ter*
rell should reply to h>s attacks,
Mr. Terrell no doubt, keep) in
mind the old Spapish proverb; “It

THE WAY TO SUCCEED.
Those who have become the
masters of finance, ire most always
tileht about the way they succeed;
not that they are afraid to tell, bat
usually the men who work, are not
the men who talk. Now and then,
however, after their work is done,
perhaps—some men whonre shown
bjuhis work* that he knows where
of he speaks, takes the trouble to
give «ome “rules for success,” to
follow in bit steps.
If these rules fail, then of course,
it is the fault of the one who seeks
to follow them—not of the rules
themselves!
Andrew Carnegie thus points
the way to success in a few concise
sentence* that seems to carry with
them, the conviction of a master
of finance, and the surity of a man
who has practiced what he preach
ed and so proved his ability and
knowledge.- He say*.
