VOLT. NO <00. • VIENNA, t3A., WEDNESDAY, MAY 14/ 1902. TWICE-A-WEEK $1.00 PER YEAR 10IEK REPLIES Tfr CITIZEN AGAIN , Editors Nev.-s:—Several days ago there appeared an article in your e x- cellent paper by Citizen in which he proceeded to land Mr. Terrell as high as the highest and put Mr. Guerry low er than the decency of an intelligent >nan would-permit. And, then say it is so hard for us to quote him correctly, hence we reproduce his- utterance and let-them stnnd as a testimony against a man who has been deluded into mak- ' ing unreasonable assertions r ■ ‘'God never made a better, truer, no bler mail than Joe Terrell. His public nnd private life is without a stain. Nothing-mean or low ever came near his head or heart. His soul is teeming With the milk of human kindness.” Mr. Citizen you forgot (Guess God did not take much pains making some men’s memory) that such extreme assertions ns the above came' only from such a man 4s you claim Mr. Guerry to' be; Ah extremist. If you meant What you said in the first portion of the' above it was claiming a gift of omniscious (though you deny it) for. yourself. If you did not mean what you said, it was only the intense emotion of a Terrell fanatic bubbling over. Next; His pub lic andprivate life is without a stain. If \6n meant what you said it was ; claiming for Mr. Terrell perfection. If you did not menn what you said you Was misrepresenting Mr. Terrell, and' trying to make the people believe some thing that Mr. TerrBll would not try to make them believe himself. Mr. Citizen in-your first article you said you knew; In your second you said' you didsolaim knowledge - but came at us thinking. Knowing and Thinking. You remind-me of Hie man-who was on a moving-engine pulling a train of flat cars, and he started back to-the cab, it was curious' to see a man ! going two ways nt one time; But which way was lie going the fastest. So you are going nnd coming at the same time but it is very easy matter to tell on which route you ate making the best time. In your last article you got down to thinking reverently, but you said the Guerry ir.en Would not think. Wedeny that charge. There aro -good, intelligent, i kinking men in Dooly county support ing Mr. Guerry. Mr. Citizen, you know that your extreme claims for Mr. Ter rell does not influence a thinking Guer ry man. Such sneering them, as you did when y’ousaid no demagogue ever led these peOplo no ultra-extremist will ever catch and hold the intelligence of the old county, is only a display of your political weakness. We asked you one question about Mr. Terrell’s position, you treated it with indifference, you said you was for Mr. Terrell because he stands for the best' interest of all the people of Georgia, that all, includes liqour makers and liqour sellers inter est. We are not supporting Mr. Guer ry for that, we are supporting him be cause he is against the liquor dealers interest, You said you was for Terrell because he is for building up and not tearing down; We are not supporting Mr. Guerry for that, we are supporting him because he is for tearing down some things, you said Mr. Terrell is for building. We say Guerry is for tearing down’the liquof traffic, you say Terrell is for building. So you see (according to your own works) Terrell is for build ing it up, Guerry is tor tearing down the influence of the great railroad sys tem of the state and your utterances say Terrell is for building it up. Guer ry is for tearing down the free pass practice, as you say Terrell is a builder and not a tcarer down, he must be for building up the practice. Guerry is for tearing down the practice of the lobby ist and you are the author of the state ment saying Terrbll is not for tearing down. In conclusion we are supporting Mr. Guerry because we are satisfied with his position on ; the liqOor question, and in him we think the state wiU have a governor In whose hand the* reins - of the government would'be safe. Now in bidding yon adieu we state- that if you deny the assertions yon have made ;,i yobs communications—Wei 1—we’ll got 1 Intimate-' that? God- did not* take MR. O. B. PERRY WRITES The Progress Bosswrites that “if ‘Citizen’ in our Semi-Weekly neighbor will show his manhood by coming out of the bush he will have on hie hands the livesl corpse he ever kicked, and the superlative mental capacity provided him by nature will need be brought into Service to.defended his case," His says also that Mr. Clewis has a natural nose for the nature of man,, and has traced crime and run down Criminals When others could not smell a track, and that <. glance ot his eagle eye is enough for any fugitive; We say away with such stuff as that. Taffy like that will not elect any man to office. Uncle George Sheppard is an old Dboly county boy, and is too well known to be cried down in any such a planner- He is a good Sheriff', and the people of old Dboly will try him for at least another term by their votes on June* jjth. He is running a fair race and is not making any combinations, but is “toting his own skillet." Mr. News : We don’t blame you for defending “Uncle George” against the unjust snortings of the Progress. Ilurruhl for Sheppard for our next Sheriff!! Well Jde Terrell is gaining v/ites everywhete, and especially has he gained them in Dooly county- for the past ten days. He will carry Dooly county by a good majority. Mr. Editor: I hope to see Mr. Glenn out and Rev. Beck take his place next term. Any man thut Ims.been in office-as long as he has and can’t tellhow to run the school department without telling how they do over the waters; it is time he was given a back seat. We would like to see Mr. O. B. Stephens hold his* place, as he is a good man and has given perfect satisfaction. Let everybody regis ter and vote for Joe Terrell and Geo. W. Sheppard. ' i O. B. Perry. Major Jackman Dead. The death of Major Jackman, who surveyed the line from Cordele to Mon tezuma, via Vienna, for the A. & B. railroad died suddenly Monday about noon at 'the home of Mr. Jno. S. Byrora at Byromville. His death is reported to have been caused from conjestion. He had resigned his position with the A. & B. authorities since reaching Ogle thorpe with the line and was spending a few days at Byromville, with Mr. Byrom before taking his departure for his home in Kentucky. But, alas i he was suddenly stricken down and the cold hands of death were up hiui.before he hardly had time to realize his condition. Mr. Jackman was a clever, good hearted man and made many 1 warm friends in Dooly and Macon counties during his short stay among its people. His body was carried to Montezuma yesterday morning and”shipped to his wife in Kentucky. 1 Has Dooly county ever hod a better Sheriff than Mr. G. TV. Sheppard? We think not. He is kind, clever and accommo dating, and is indeed one of the BEST and most efficient Sheriffs in Georgia. He is certainly the RIGHT MAN in the place.— VIENNA PROGRESS. Lasseter, L. L. Woodward and Scage Morgan. They report a de lightful time, * Mr. Editor: In last week’s Prog ress there is an article which i< meant to be in favor of Mr. Lewis Clewis for Sheriff which tries to make it seem that he (Lewis Clew is) lias a better mental capacity for the position of Sheriff than that of our present Sheriff with his long experience. It goes on to tell about his eagle eye nnd nose for crime and cites as a case of his Sherloch Holmes ability in discovering tlje sawed bars in the cell of John Henry Peavy, when the truth of the matter is and I have und will if necessary produce evidence to substantiate what I say, tr.at the way in which Mr. Clewis found out about the negro attempting to escape was in no way a very deep mystery und not on account of his superior ability to detect mischief, I have it on good authority that the reason Mr. Clewis found out and possibly prevented Peavy from es caping, here is the story: “A day or so before Mr. Clewis made hi6 wonderful discovery he was in Unadilla and a man in that town told him. that u negro of that place who had recently been liberated from the jail told Mr. Clewis’ in former that he was suspicious that Peavy was trying to break jufl and told him that he had heard sawing or filing going on in his cell. The man told Mr. Clewis, who at thut time was not a candi date for Sheriff, to tell Mr. Shep pard, but he failed to do so for some mysterious reason and it seems that some of Ins ignorant friends are trying to make it appear that he was detective. When the truth of the matter was, Mr. Sheppard would have been informed any way the next day und so have prevented his- escupc. Editor Smith will have to bring something better than that to the YIENNA SECURES AN OIL MILL It is now an assured fact that Vienna will soon have a Cottorv Oil Mill with a capital stock of $35,000 with the privilege of in creasing, and the charter will very likely be applied- for the latter part of this week or the first of next week. There has been some agitation along. this line for the past few years as it is plainly 6een that bur town liked a few manufacturing enterprises, but nothing was ever done until the contract for securing the A. & B. railroad was signed. Mr. Jno. B.
