Vi? VOL. I. NO 101, VIENNA. GA., SATURDAY. MAY 17, 1902. TWICE-A"WEEK $1.00 PER YEAR riEETS WITH AN ACCIDENT On last Wednesday afternoon Frank J. Lewis, Candidate for Tax Collector and G. F. Swearingen were traveling around on a lection* eering tour in the northwestern part of the county and a little after dark they found themselves driv ing through the place of Mr. Eli Woodruff. They went to drive through a gate and ran against the post, knocking it down, throwing Mr. Lewis out of the buggy. The lines were caught by Mr. Swear ingen, who possibly prevented 4 runaway. Mr. Lewis escaped un hurt, but knocked down some of Mr. Woodruff’s fine cotton when he fell out of the buggy. One of the buggy wheel’s was mashed uo considerably and the cross piece and shaft iron sprained. They spent the nigh* with Mr. Woodruff and the broken parts of the buggy were mended sufficiently the next morning for them to continue their journey. The whole cause ot the accident it is said, was due to the fact that Mr. Lewis, was in deep study as to how and what to say to Mr. Wood ruff in reference to his candidacy, which is now foremost in his mind. He will probably do more looking than studying when driving through' a gate in the future. MER ER CNIVERS1TY NOTES. TfiEH. H. Unadiiln, Ga., May, 16, The farmers are having some fine weather to destroy grass, this week, where they. |js(ye . recently had rain. Thursday our Sunday schools, together with those of Pinehurst, Snow and Etnerich picnicked at Beech Haven. We are sure that it was thoroughly enjoyed by every one. Had plenty of dinner and lemonade. Wc wish to thank the management of the railroad for its accommodation in giving us plenty of cars this time. Mrs. W< B. Nichols returned home from Americus last Tuesday. Mr. Campbell of Cordele, agent for the Mutual Life Insurance com pany of New York, spent Tuesday in town. Mr. F. E. Leggitt visited friends in Cochran this week. Our veteran fishermen went to Fleming’s bridge on Big Creek this week, t We hear that some of them have put up their tackles and have enough for this season. Mr. Cummings, representing the I partner and friend—that won’t do. Editor News: As the time for the primary approaches, it becomes more and more apparent that it is Terrell by a landslide. All along the line the Terrell forces are closing in and the Guerry ranks are becoming thinner and more demoralized. I had about corioluded that Mr. Guerry would not make any more blunders during the campaign for the reason that there were no more that he could commit but he has a fertile, as well as a lurid', imagination and now He has attacked the Prison Commission and charged the members thereof with enough, if true, to turn them out of office and disgrace them forever. In his desperation and unseemingly greed for office he could not even spare hi* friend, General Clement A. Evans. General Evans Is naturally indignant nnd so are his friends Mr. Dumont Guerry' is powerless to harm or to smirch the character of Gen. Evans. Such uncalled for attacks inevitably recoil upon the perpetrator. A more inconsistent man than Mr. Guerry would be hard to find. For years tho adviser and special champion of railroads, he tears his hair and shows strong symptoms of rabbles when a railroad is mentioned how. When a youth (?) of thirty-five we find him fighting prohibition tooth nnd toe, twenty years later when a candidate for offico he is the annointed leader of the prohibition cause. When a "green” senator he voted with ' the railroads to allow them to discriminate against the small towns and farmers, by charging as much for a short as a long haul; he voted to raise the legal rate of Interest tq 12 per cont, but now when a candi date for governor he tells the dear people how close to his heart their interests are. Ah! Mr. Guerry you are not deceiving the people of Georgia—not all of them They know your record and they know that it is not consistent with - your present attitude. Knowing you to be inconsistent they believe you to be in sincere. Either that or you are not well balanced. In either event not a fit person to preside over the destinies of this great state. A prohibition, yet voting against it. A corporation attorney all your life and representing how one of the strongest monopolies in the state, yet abusing corporations. A prohibitionist from principal (?) yet supporting an avowed liquor man for the legislature. It will not out you to say that he Is your The Stockholders of the Cotton Oil Mill closed a trade with Mr. D. B Thompson Wednesday lor his roundlap ginnery, cotton seed home and all the buildings situated on' three acres of land east of the G.’ S. & F. railroad, With the acre of land that Dr. C. T. Stovall has agreed to donate towards the site of a manufacturing, enterprise, they will have nearly enough kind to erect the Oil Mill on. The price agreed upon was $6,500. The Oil Mill will be in operation,' together with the ginnery at the opening of the cotton season. This is a much needed enterprise and will do a great deal towards the upbuilding of Vienna and her cotton market. public calamity to turn the affairs of Georgia over to such a irowd. Happily for the prosperity of Georgia there is small chance for such misfortune to overtake us. On the morning of the 0th of June Mr. Guerry will seramble from amid the ruins of defeat and exclaim in the language of the gentlemen he seeks to imitate and whose erstwhiie following he courts: “Where am I at?” Citizen. Only one week till 1 our com mencement-. We hope the people of the town will appreciate the ef forts of our teachers, such thiugs cost these good people many hours of hard work. Will Cura Consumption. A A Herren, Finch, Ark., writes, “Fol ey’s Honey and Tar is tiie best prepara tion for coughs, colds, and lung trouble. I know it has cured consumption in the first stages.” For sale by all dealers. Neither will the other perulo excuse that no prohibition in Bibb county is running, suffice. Suppose you were a democrat and a republican was running for the legislature, would you vote for him? Wouldn’t you get out a demo crat to vote for or failing in that not vote at all? If you were a democrat you certainly would. That is the way tho people view it, Mr. Guerry. In one thing Mr. Guerry has been eminently successful, he has attracted to his standard, ail of the calamity howlers, the cranks and extremists, all of the ancient and more recent foes of democracy and all of the disgruntled, sore head politicians. I do not pretend to say that all the people who are sup porting him belong to these. There is among his followers a email minority of honest, patriotic, though misguided citizens. But the men who are leading his campaign, represent a fnotley crew of malcontents. The men who have always stood for law and order, for good government and democracy in Georgia are conspicousiy absent* from the Guerry camp. Sam Jones, Broughton, Seab Wright and their seetclltes, sworn foes of democracy, these ore his cap tains, It would be nothing short of a Ben Byrom, colored, turned loose a load of bird shot at Henry Reed colored, Thursday ef last week which took effect in the side and elbow, inflicting a painful wound. The shooting occurred in the neigh borhood of Mr. Eli Woodruff. The difficulty arose over some hogs and a goat that Reed’s wife had sold Byrom. At last accounts Reed was getting along very well., NOTICE- The telephone exchange will be closed at this, place fiom 8 o’clock until 6 o’clock on Sunday in the future.
