Has DOoly county ever had a better
8her!ff than Mr. G. W. Sheppard?. We
think not. He is kind, clever and ac

The management did not approve of
the article, and Si Tip’s letters were
discontinued.
We have been looking three weeks for
this article, and expected it to bo cred
ited to the Progress instead of Si Tip,
knowing that the Semi-Weekly was
searching this pqpor from a to z for
flaws.

The editor of the News knew
when we published the compli
mentary notice that it w«s written
by Mr, W. S. Christian, u young
man then in the employ of ihe
Progress, under the head of ‘‘Grape
Shots, by Si Tip," and that it
was hot from the gifted (?) pen of
the Progress. We knew to, and
thought about it at that time as to
bow strange and tunny it seemed,
appearing as it did, soon ufter the
Progress editor found out thut the
Sheriff intended changing the legul
advestisements to the News. We
also knew that Mr. Christian had
only been with the Progress a short
time, and certainly must huye heard
some nice things said about the
Sheriff by the editor of the Prog
ress, which caused him to write of
the Sheriff in such coinplimentury
terms.
Yes, we repeat that we didn’t
understand such a compliment being
paid out Sheriff by the Progress
the flaws that appear in public
print.
We deny that you stopped *‘Si
Tip’s” letters on account of the
above article. Do ^ou want the
proof 01 reason?
You say we have no excuse for
allowing men to hide behind ficti
tious names to abuse you. Well,
we wouldn’t have done so, had you
not got “puffed up” about the
compliment that was paid us by
“Citizen.” It didn’t mention the
Progress any more so th’an it did
the other papers in the county. It
must have been an over dose of
“the hit dog howls.” If no other
paper in the county wouldn’t allow
any one abused, why did you
knowingly misreptesent facts and
insinuate things against the charac
ter of Sheriff Sheppard?
It is our purpose to deal fairly
with all questions that come up
before us. and not to engage in
personalities. If we are informed
of any thing that we have misrep
resented we are ready to correct the
same at any time. Will the editor
ot the Progress correct some mis
representations that it’s attention

matter due consideration we came
to the conclusion thut the editor of
the Progress endorsed the compli
ment in the hope that “Uncle
George” might decide not to change
the advertisements before the time
came for him to do so.
But lo! and behold, lie changed
them, and the Progress editor after
working up to a few weeks ago to
get the Sheriff to promise a certain
time when he would put them buck
in that paper, and failing in his
efforts, turned loose his ptn and

In his Tampa speech Sam Tones
touched on natiobal issues. He
declared that he was neither a dem
ocrat, a republican nor a populist
Every time the republicans played
the rascal,'he said, the democrats
played the fool. Whereof, he was
sorry for the democracy; they' had
troubles above the eyes; they kicked
out and jumped on the only man
thut had ever led ’em to victory
since the war, and had run off with
another follow that had led them
to defeat twice. “Yes free silver
men—you must feel like a new
fool—if you don't, you don’t feel
natural, tliut’s all.”
It appears that the Reverend
Samuel is ot the opinion that every
person who docs not agree with
him on every question both in poll
tics and religion, is a fool. And
this is the man who proposes to go
about over the state and try to
stir up enthusiasm for Mr. Guerry,
“in the interest of pure politics
A man that admits he is not a
cemocrat, a man who endorses the
trusts and a man who calls every
man who differs with him a fool.
It is hardly probable that Mr. Jones
will accomplish much good for the
cause of the candidate he will cham
