Iins Dooly county ever hod a better 8herIlT than Mr. G. W. Sheppard? We think not. He is kind,.olever and accommo dating, and is indeed one of the BEST and most efficient Sheriffs in Georgia. He is certainly the BIGHT MAN in the right place. —VIENNA PROGRESS. Now, the above whs published in that paper the woek after he learned that the Sheriff intend ed changing the legal ada. ’ ™ N.Tii.’y qO TO THE POLLS AND VOTE. The Vienna Progress comes at us this week under the above head (which is its last issue before the primary) in answer to only two of the things mentioned in an article in the News two weeks ago. Not withstanding we made it a point to ask him to answer all the ques tions and assertions at once, so that the people would know who has lied, three issues of his paper have passed and he has for some reasons evaded all but two. He has not said a word about the Neivs having said that he had iuslely misrepre sented Sheriff Sheppard in regard to the hanging of John Henry Peavy and the truth about the filing ot the bars in the cetl of this 6ame negro and the '‘eagle eye” that detected the same. He hus had three issues to do 60. However, he calls us to taw on our saying that "V6tcr” and the editor were the same person. We got information from a certain source to that effect, aud if it wasn’t correct it is not our fault. But no matter, that is no excuse for you not answering the accusation that some of your answers were not true.- How about thul? Is not three issues time enough for you to do so? We are still standing by the following assertion : “Any man 'who says that a money consideration obtained from the Sheriff the change of the legal advertisements from tho Progress to the News is either doing so to try to influence voters to turn against the good old Sheriff of Dooly county or he is just simply lying." . Sheriff Sheppard s'nnds reudy to bear out the truth in thisstutement. The fact that the Sheriff told you that money would not keep the legal advertisements from being changed to the News, when you went to him and said that you would do ns much for him as tiny- IN THE NAME OF LOVE. The News would urge the neces sity of every supporter of the Hon. Joseph M. Terrell to .go to the polls next Thursday and cast their ballots for this nbie and conserva tive man tor our next governor. Many supporters of Mr. Terrell in Dooly county' may not have any desire to lose the time from their : body if he would not change them, farms in order to vote for hun, from ought.to be enough to convince the tact that they aie so certain of anybody that there Was nothing in his being elected, whether he carries what Sheriff Sheppard said to you Dooly county or not. out we in a laughing way, only ns an should not be content nt his being excuse to get rid of "Henry” and qlscted but every citizen that hat his pitiful tale ot woe. decided to vole for Mr. Terrell 1 We have said nothing on our qltould be certain to go to the polls own hook that we cannot prove, qnd cast their ballots. { We have demanded proof of things Let’s roll up a handsome majoiitv that hate been said in the Progress lor Mr. Terrell right here in Doolv , but we have failed to receive any qouhty despite the fact that the ardent supporters of Mr. Guerry say to the contrary. This we feel Confident will be the result unless the Terrelljsupportcrs become too qertuin of his election and fail to lake the proper interest in his be half. Cheap rates have been secured on all railroads. The management have our thanks for a complimentary ticket. Toe Terrell will be elected by a handsome majority and the affairs of the state \yilj move along calmly as ever. COMPTROLLER GENE-AL’^ OFFICE Tux Department Atlanta, Gn. Mr. F. J. Lewis, Vienna, Gn. Dear Sir; Your final statement of 1902, and all necessary vouchers have been received. They have been examined and found correct; I enclose receipt for Receiver’s commission paid which closes your account with the state for that year. £ desire to express my appreciation of your uniformly wood work as Tax Collector, and to thank you in behalf of the stute for your faith* ful and efficient service,, and for your promptness in making reports and remittances, with best wishes Yours truly, W. A. Wright, ‘ Cqntp. Gfu,. One of the growing und most alarming evils of the times are the tragedis such as occurred in the little country church near Atlanta Sun day, when an insanely jealous young man overcome by a brutal passion that he calls "love,*” shot and killed a defenseless girl. A similar cate is reported today front a Northern state, and almost every day in somjs place, such awful deeds, are done, in the name of love.' There is no remedy that will check such crimes in the power of laws; for law can only punish, and men who do these things do not fear death. Indeed, more often than not, they turn a still smoking revolver or a knife still dripping with warm blood, upon themselves and complete the punishment im mediately after the crime. The only way in which such tragedies may be averted rests with the young women who might be come victims. They should not have uny social intercourse with boys or young men who are reck less or who are unworthy of atten tion. There is a careless indiffer ence to a young man’s character and temperament, among, the majority o‘f girls, arising most generally from ignorance and unexperience. But it should be a recognized fact among all young wotnsn, that the more careful they are of allowing them selves to associate only with men who are truly gentlemen, the less danger they are in; not only of be ing murdered, but of being unhap pily married, which is perhaps quite us tragic in its final outcome—Ma con News. COMMUNICATED. To the Editor of the News: I beg your kind indulgence to call the special attention of the voters at the approaching primary election' to the candidacy of Mr. H. \V. Powell, who asks to he sent as one of the represen tatives in the next general assembly. That Mr. Powdll has conducted a nice', clean and open handed campaign no one can deny. Ho was the last to enter tho race and only did so at the earnest re quest of many of Dooly’s most repre sentative citizens, who hnew his quiet, conservative and level-headed ability to represent them, who knew that he would attentively study their interests and vote accordingly. He has sorved the people . in public office before, and always has been found to be careful, painstaking, accommo dating and thoroughly honest. He has not entered into any clique, combina tion or combine and will not do so either here or in the legislature. He has spoken ill of none and lias not sought to spread reports against other candidates. Ho is a farmer, as you all know, one who attends to his own bus- j iness and does not intermeddle with that of others. He is an upright, hon est, sober mnn; a good citizen, careful and conservative. He was a good sol dier, a privute, who, as a mere boy of 16 put bis face to the “Stars and Bars” under the leadership of the illustrious Gordon. The veterans, the sons of veterans, the daughtess of veterans nnd the tax payers generally, have nothing to feor in voting for Henry Powell. The present indications are that he will surely be elected. He has recently had sickness in his family, has been short of stock and had to work his farm, so any one can and ought to excuse, him if he has not been able to see them. Wo hope that every voter will have this good man’s name on his ticket when he rotes and we feel sure that he will never regret It as he is a man who can and will lookter the best interests of all. .
