A TlflELY THOUGHT.
It has been said, that to live for
qnc’s country is often more difficult
qnd not less nobletharito die for it,
says the Philadelphia Times.
A varia'ion upon this thought was
given by Archbishop Ryan in his
Memorial Day uddress, when he
t^pokc of the decline of moral stand
ards as "weighing.against the in-
Jegrity of the republic more deeply
tlinli wars.” We ought to be ready
to die not only in defense of the
flag abroad, but in defense of hon-
qsty and purity at home.
This U the sentiment of the
preacher, of course, but it .is also
the sentiment qt the citizens. "We
of today must be more honest,” he
said, ‘ 'if the standards of the past
Mtuli be those of the. future,” and
the republic for which so many lives
were sacrificed shall still be preserv
ed, And lie spoke a thought that
is in every man’s mind when he
went on to particularize one special
duty; "We must respect the bal
lot box. ”
What can there be better worth
righting for than the freedom and
purity of the ballot? We applaud

. Mr. John D. Rockefeller, who
will pass through Atlanta soon, is
perhaps the greatest financier in
America. He started life as a far
mer boy, and his first earnings were
a quarter for hoeingapotato patch.
He hired out in the summer, until
his family moved to Cleveland,
when he began city life as an of
fice boy. Later he became a clerk
in a commission house; and the first
thirty years of his life was lived
upon the ordinary income of an or
dinary American citizen. At thir
ty years of age, Mr, Rockerfeller
had saved $1,000, and it was at
this time "the tide” came—which
was taken at "its flood” by the
man who was at heart a financier
of the highest order—and it "lead to
the fortunes.”
By masterly management, the
business of oil-refining. in which
the young financier invested his
savings, has grown from a very
small affair, to the largest and
mightiest corporation in the world,
which supplies the world with
kerosene and acknowledge? but one
competitor, the Russian company,
whose wells ate at the toot ot the
Causasus mountains. Mr. Rocke
feller is a kindly,.courteous gentle
man. whose great wealth is wisely
managed. His expressed opinion
of the method he follows is this; "I
think it is a man’s duty to make
all the money he can, to keep all
he can. and give away all he can.”
It is doubtful if the multi-mil
lionaire really knows the exact
amount of his income. He has
said, that he does not know within
ten million dollars of what his for
tune amounts to.
An impressive estimate, if hardly
exacts, has been arranged by a clev
er historian of the gicat American
millionaire, thus;
Present fortune
$200,000,000,00
13,000,000,00
1,000,000,00

“I’ll show' you,” said Mr. Green.
Then he shoved a four foot stick as
far into the stove as it would go and
rested the-end on a chair back. As
the stick burned down he shoved it
a little farther into the stove, until
it was small enough to go in entire
ly. The servant girl gave notice at

Senator Bacon's Last 8kate.
Senator Bacon of Georgia is clean
shaven and baldheaded. Once when
a young man he wore long, flowing
side whiskers. When the roller skat
ing craze of fifteen or twenty years
ago struck Georgia, Bacon was the
crack skSter of his town. One night
he was out on the floor of the rink
making fancy figures when two am
ateurs, hand in hand, bore down on
him. He tried to get out of the
way, but couldn’t.
Tfle two skaters bumped into the
embryo senator. One caught hold
of his whiskers on one side, and the
other took a grip on the other side.
Yelling with pain, Bacon tried to

A Causflc Preacher.
The Rev. William H. Walker is
about to give up the pastorate of
the First Congregational church of
Wilmette, 111., and one of the rea
sons assigned for his departure is
that the women of his congregation
do not like his personal appearance.
The brushing of his hair in pompa
dour style, the minister alleges,
caused his trouble. “I admit,” he
said the other day, “that I am not a
handsome man, and it is my experi
ence that many women would rath
er see n good looking man than hear
a good sermon.”

begged all her acquaintances to

One old Portuguese lady arrived in

other 1,300 guests all appeared in
