Tt is a strange sight to see a Chi nese sawmill and the peculiar man ner in which the work is accom plished. It consists of a log that has been hewn square and placed upon supports, on which a single Chinaman nearly naked stands and manipulates a large saw, which com prises the motive power and the requisite machinery, and by a very slow process the lumber is cut in thickness to meet the demands of trade. It is said there are no other kinds of sawmills in nil that coun try. And to think that such a state of affairs exists in an empire over a thousand yeiirs old and among a people in some respects so profi cient! The reason for this no Leather For Decoration. It is said that leather has niver been so extensively used for decora tive purposes as now. For many years it was practically restricted to dining room, office and library chairs and sofns and then was seen only in its plain, unembellished form. With the renaissance in house hold art that began about twenty- live years ago emne a more general knowledge and appreciation of the sumptuous old Spanish and English leathers that were seen ou antique furniture, and modern dealers set themselves to work to emulate their beauties if possible. As a result leather has become so beautiful that it expresses the highest tiling at tainable in household art in several directions. In many cases these leathers are reproductions of the old Cordovan, so long famous, and even the soft ness o? tone that in the Cordovan is Application' For Charter. GEORGIA—Dooly County. "When 1 have anything to say,” remarked Henry Watterson che oth er day, “I write it.. Thep I put it in my pocket. 1 After awhile 1 take it out, read it and write it again. Onco more I put it away. Then I writo it again and send it down to the printer and have it put in type. When I get the proof, I run over it "closely and writo it again, and again it goes to the printer. Afterward it is sent to me again in the revised proof. Then I make the last correc tions and send it down again. And then,” continued Mr. Watterson, with a heavy sigh, “the confounded printer gets it wrong.” Now Wall Papers. It is a satisfaction for the woman with a slender purse, intent upon furnishings for the city or country home, to know that the now waft paper designs in the cheaper grudes are just as dainty.in design and good in coloring ns the more costly coverings intended for the summer cottage of fortune\favorite. Spring is the season when the wall papef manufacturers bring forth real treasures, and this year there is u fine supply on hand. Green is the favorite for the drawing room, with white second in demand, and some of the most beautiful patterns are in Louis XVI. designs on u founda tion of pale green or white and oc casionally rose Du Barry pink. Blue gray is a new. shade of paper for staircases, while there are the love liest of reproductions of old chintr.es for bedrooms. In renovating either the city or the country home there is no excuse this season for selecting inartistic or unsuitable wall paper. Many kinds of skin ore used, as some ore too coarse of grain to be come flexible enough or to take the finish demanded for certain purpos es: Cowhide could not be applied to walls and screens, but is perfect ly adapted to chairs and conches. The same is true of most sheepskin, and great care is exercised in selec tion, before the coloring and decora tion are applied. . Blackburn and Frye. Senators Frye and Blackburn are very good, friends. Nothing delights the president pro tom. of the senate more than to imitate the Kentucky accent of Blnckburn. He declares that the other day when Blackburn was in the marble room a man ask ed him if Senator Hoar was on the floor of the senate. “No. suit,” replied Blackburn, ac cording to the Frye version; “Sen ator Ho’ is not on th’ flo\ He went out that do’ at half past fo’.” An Odd Classification.
