i LIGHTNING40LT KILLS FiVE MEN Victims Were Stringing Up> Telephone Wires. ^ DEADLY FLUID FOLLOWED LINE Same Current Whelmed Two Sep arate Gangs Stationed Five Miles Apart. Three white nefl and two negitoss killed, one white man and one -negro injured is the result of a severe thun- der and lightning storm in the vicinity of Offerman, Ga., Monday, afternoon. The men were all employed in the construction department of the South ern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company and were stretching wire when struck by lightning. The con struction force was working in two sections about five miles apart Three white men were killed and one injured in one section, two negroes killed and one injured in the other. One lightning bolt killed the five and Injured the two. Two gangs were at work construct ing a new telephone line between Sa vannah and Jacksonville. One gang was located at Little Satllla river, two miles from Screven, _ and : the other, gang located netu: Patterson, eighteen miles east of Waycross. Two negroes were killed and wounded from the Pat terson gang and three killed and one wounded from the gang located at Lit tle Satllla river. The men had quit work in the early afternoon on account Of rain and had just commenced again when lightning struck the wires at 4:30'o’clock. It Is supposed that the same shock killed the men on both gangs. Those killed at Patterson were Tom Mitchell, colored,,of Valdosta, and Wiil Culbert, colored. R. W. Smith, ■ white, was wounded seriously in the back and in ternally. B. Boykin, white, of South Carolina, was badly shocked, but will recover. - When the shock came Smith and Boykin were on top of the pole. Smith fell to the ground, a distance of twenty feet. Boykin falling across the wire, was prevented from -falling to 'the ground. Pour men were at the foot of the pole handling the wires. The shock killed two instantly and knocked the other two senseless. At Little Satllla, river the killed were P. B. Sluder, single, white, of North Carolina; M. C. Hawkins, sin gle, white, and A. H. Rymcr, white. D. B. Brad field, of Atlanta, badly shock ed; will recover. Sluder and Hawkins were unmarried, while Rymer leaves a wife and ten children. The men had Just begun work like the Patterson gang when the shock came. From fif teen to twenty men were working In each gang. It Is believed to have been a ihistake of the foremen In allowing the men to work eo soon after the lightning storm. CITY IttFUSKH CONCESSIONS. Knock-Out Blow (liven Plans For New Depot In Atlanta. So far as the Atlanta, Ga., city coun cil is concerned the proposition to erect a new depot on the state’s prop erty under the plans proposed by Ar chitect Bradford L. Gilbert Is practi cally dead. By its action Monday afternoon council placed itself upon record as opposed to meeting the conditions re qulted under the Gilbert pUn and-In answer to a communication from the special depot committee of the state leg'slature stated that It was lmpos zlble for the city to ig-ee to Blve the property demanded by the state. The success of the Gilbert plan de pended entirely upon the willingness ’of the city to the raising of its bridges and upon its willingness to do nate a portion of wall street to the state. Council declared that the sacri fice would be greater than the results would warrant and declined to make the Concessions. KAY BE ilEIK TO FORTUNE. Atlanta Woman Claims to Be Daugh ter of Charles Hill, Deceased. There has been found in Atlanta, Ga., the daughter and probable heir of Charles Hill, a supposed Georgia con federate veteran, who died come weeks ago at Groton, S. Dak., leaving $144,- 000 in cosh. Miss Lillar Hill, of Atlanta, has -stated her case to Adjutant General J. W. Robertson in such a manner as to make It practically certain she is the daughter of the dead man and is entitled U his estate. A strike of .9,000 freight handlers lh Chicago was called Monday, and every freight house of the twenty.four rail roads concerned was practically tied, tip. Business men fear that the strike’ will be the most serious which has af fected their interests in years. The principal railroad systems at: fected by the strike are; The Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis; Chicago and Great Western; Baltimore and Ohio; Erie; Atchison, Topeka and San-ta Fe; Chicago Terminal Transfer Company; Lake Shore and Michigan Southern; Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific; Chi cago and Alton; the Monon; Chicago and Eastern Illinois; Wabash; Grand Trunk; Chicago, Burlington and Quin cy; the Pennsylvania; Chicago and Northwestern; Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul; Illinois Central; Michi gan Central and Nickel Plate. The strike was called by a commit tee appointed at a meeting of 1,000 freight handlers held Sunday night. The committee was Instructed to call a strike within forty-eight hours unless the railroads should meet the demands of the men at once for an Increase In wages, extra pay for overtime and holi days and recognition of the union. The men on the Michigan Central, Illinois and Wisconsin Central houses on the lake were first to act. With cheers 1,000 men walked out from these warehouses alone. Th»y congregated at the for; of the Ran dolph street viaduct, where several speakers counseled law-abiding meth ods. Anticipating the possibilities of such a strike, the railroad companies had brought to Chicago a considerable nummber of men to take the places of the strikers. These men were inter cepted by pickets of the strikers and most Of them were Induced to Join the Freight Handlers' Union. A later dlspatch.states that hopes of a speedy settlement of the strike are entertained by officials of tbe union and members of tbe'state board of ar bitration. The officials of the union at a conference Monday night inform ed Chairman Job. of .the board of arbi tration, that they were willing to per mit employees of the different compa nies to meet officials of the same to discuss the wage scale, providing a Joint conference should be held at Which officials of the union would be permitted to act as advisers to the men. Senator Tillman Addresses a Large Crowd at Marietta Chatauqaa, At the Marietta, Ga., Chautauqua Senator Tillman, of South Carolina, spoke to a large audience on “The Race Problem." Senator Tillman was introduced by Senator A. S. Clay and for an hour and a half he discussed his subject. When he stated that he was about to close voices throughout tbe audience urged him to continue. But the senator said It was too hot. The heat was intense and the glare under.the white tent al most unbearable. Senator Tillman thinks tbe solution of the race problem Is by suitable legislation and conatltutlons by the states, such as South Carolina, Ala bama and other southern states have passed. He says the first and control ling problem Is political supremacy by the white people at all hazards. Should the negro become successful In domi nating his politics above the white man then tbe next step would be an attempt at social equality, which could never exist. 'He spoke of the eight years just fol lowing the late civil war, when South Carolina was under negro domination, and told how the white people, regard less of negro majorities and the pres ence of federal soldiers to guard the polls and have a fair ballot and fair count, carried tbe state democratic by a good majority. They have since, he said, and will forever more hold power there. Murderer of Mrs. Castle Goes Up For Twenty-Five Years. Jessie Morrison, 'convicted June .28 of.murder in the second degree for killing Mrs. Olin Castle at the latter’s home at Eldorado, Rons,, in June, 1900, by cutting her throat with a ra zor, was sentenced Tuesday to twenty- five years In the penitentiary. Motion for a new trial was overruled. Miss Morrison, Who has gone through three trials, took the sentence with little show or demonstration.
