Willis Ponder. ; deppty warden in charge of the penitentiary camp- at Jakln, Early county, and Dr. H. G, Mlnter, physician of the camp, will have to answer to -the courts the charge of murder as the result of the death, about two years ago, of Frank Kent, a negro convict, due to a cruel and Inhuman form of punishment The facts In the case were only re cently communicated to the prison commission In a letter written by Si mon O'Neill, a recently pardoned con- vict, sent up from Chatham county for voluntary manslaughter. O'Neill’s charges against those in authority at’ the camps were made through the newspapers JuBt after he was given his liberty. According to the statement made by O'Neill, Frank Kent met his death as the result of a form of punishment not authorized by the prison commls sion and about wh'lch nothing was known until O’Neill’s charges ap peared. Kent was put In what they called a “sweater."' This consists of confin ing the victim In a place near a red hot stove completely covered with many blankets. This punishment was administered by several convicts at the direction of Ponder. Kent was kept in this condition as long as It was thought advisable, or about three hours. He was then com pletely exhausted and Dr. Mlnter did all he could to revive him, but the next day Kent died. The punishment was Inflicted because, it Is stated, Kent was an unruly convict and did not like to work. No report of the matter was ever mad© to the commission by the camp authorities, andf Dr. Winter's report simply stated that Kent had died from aerebral congestion. Two years later, or a short time ago, the matter came to the attention of the prison commia- ston and an Investigation was at once made with the result thht Ponder and Mlnter will be prosecuted, the first for murder and the second as accessory after the fact, • • • Woman to Spring Trap.
