WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18th, 1802 Return postage seems to be the greatest drawback in literature. Prof. SJedd evidently had an aye on. a, northern job when he wrote that article on the negro. A girl wearing last .season’s wuiiits with tight sleeves in them evidently feels the pinch of poverty An exchange truthfully remarks that a wise mother is the faithful, tender who, never misplaces a switch. 1 in Massachusetts the other day a man was sent to the penitentiary lor stealing a pin—it had a diamond on one end’ of it. I King Edward thanks the Lord for his recovery—but ho will have to pay the doctors, just the same, remarks the Atlanta, Journal. Lightning struck the Baptist church at DeSoto, Sumter county, Sunday morning during service, killing Mr. Richard Dodson, a first cousin of Hon. W: A. Dodson of Atncricus,. and injuring several others. A WARNING TO YOUNG MEN. The Houston, post predicts, a big cotton crop in Texas, after sum marizing reports from every county in ttye state. This report is quite contrary to the ones recently sent out, when the insects, were said to be damaging the crops considerably Prot.. Andrew Sledd,.one of the teachers in Emory college, who • recently wrote a. very foolish article in the Atlantic Monthly on the negro question in the 'South, has resigned his position. Ho hnt bccn.the object of severe criticism sinqp the article appeared,, and his resignation, is dne to,the fact that i)is remaining'blight injure the col* lege. That was right. We don’t want any teacher* in; our colleges that have such ideas. He would undoubtedly have 1 been asked to resign by the board hod he not done W, voluntarily. When once a man begins to go down hill it is hard to turn back and easy to pitch forward headlong into the moral abyss, says the Macon Telegraph. Putnam Bradlee Strong, former captain in the army of the United States, began his de scent less than two years ago as the lover of another mun’s wife and already a warrant has been issued for his arrest as a thief. Young Strong, as the son oi William L. Strong, reform mayor of New York, began life with every desirable advantage. It was com- paritively easy for him to hold up his head and continue in the path of an honorable career. But, be coming fascinated with the notor ious actress, May Yohe, wife of Lord Francis Hope, he threw away his opportunities, eloped with her, and was dismissed from the army. It was only to be expected that, ut ter their journey around the world, they would tire of each other, and that the actress would quarrel with her army officer as she bud quarteled with her lord. But it was scarcely expected that young Strong would so soon descend to such depths of depravity as are now reported, ■ It seems that on their return to America, - at the request of May Yohe, young Strong deposited ut a banker’s jewels owned'by her val ued at fiooo.ooo, registering them without her knowledge in his own name, and that since then he has gradually been removing and pawn ing them. Finally, it is said, he took a diamond neckluce from her boudoir and after realizing $900 on it, disappeared, leaving a letter of confession for his mother and an- other tor the woman he had robbed —announcing iiis intention to com nut suicide. There was no sugges cion of suicidal intent in his dishon est scheme to raise ail possible funds and naturally his aanonceinent was not believed. May Yohe seems to have rccurned his passion, but a diamond neckluce is more precious in her sight thsn a lover who has clearly abandoned hei for good, and she promptly instructed tier lawyer to swear out a warrant for Stong’s arrest on the charge of giand lur ceny. As a result of an unlawful passion for a married actress, Cupt Putnam Bradlee Strong has become a crim nal, not merely ruining his own life, but bringing disgrace upon his honorable family. The deplor able affair should be a warning to all young men who know in their hearts that they arc weak in the face of danger and that the sedtic- duct ions of vice may easily become moie powerful than the claims of honor.
