Ct is thought best for the good of all
to sell tickets, either for one month or
for-the entire foil term, in advance.
Ou r reasons for this are: (I) more
nsolor attendance, (3) most systematic
muy. of arranging the financial af-
Msm of a school and (3) -less trouble

Is it not a-fuct that a great many
bright boys and girls actually learn
to quit work, to refuse to helpabout
the house or the tarm, at.some of the
schools to which they, huve been
sent? What does.it profit a boy or
girl to be thus taught to shoot at the
sky and go in the hole?
It is all right for parents to strive
to make their sons und daughters
leaders of men and women, and to
push them in their education just as
far as they will go. It is-ull right
for boys and. girls to be ambitious
and hopeful, and to look aloft in
their yearning to be of speciul use
to the world. Is it not all right
to fancy that the opportunity to ac
complish such things lies along only
a few of the old lines, within the
narrow scope of a few worn-out
and over-crowded prolessions?
The world is wide. The oppor
tunities are many, The old fallacy
as to differences and distinctions in
callings has been explored. This is
the age of progress and of practical
education. It is no longer in order
to.fadliere-to‘.the old-time course
which, tends to. create in .the stu
dent u disregard for common sense,
a distaste for common thiugs and
for practical methods. Education
of the best kind should reveal to
every bright boy or gist the fact
that there is no useful service that
is to be despised. Sucli at all events
should be the kind of teaching
which the State offers freely to its
future citizens.

The Coming Industrial Powerl
By Dr. GEORGE F. SHRADY. New York
is the great middle class that we must look out for. Their;
children are to be the power in the community—tho boys j
that are being graduated from our public schools and the |.
boys from the country that nro coming into our great city shops. I

ARE BOUND TO BE THE POWER IN THE FUTURE.
CHILDHOOD NOT THE

English Novelist
HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD THE FEEL
INGS OF THOSE WHO ARE SORRY THAT
THEY ARE FULL GROWN. TO DIFFERENT
CHILDREN THERE IS, OF COURSE, A DIF
FERENT CHILDHOOD; BUT, AS A RULE,
THE HAPPINESS OF CHILDHOOD IS A DELUSION AND.i
THE PEACE OF THE BABY CARRIAGE A MYTH.
A child's pleasures aro mostly due to its lovo of acquisition, its.
vanity or its appetite being temporarily satisfied. From its natural; !
affection for its parents or friends—if that nffection is very strong— j
it gets far moro suffering than pleasure. Any man of average Intel-:
ligence can do hotter than. that. He has work that interests him, ,
books or music or pictures that mean far more to him than anyj
child’s pleasure means to the child. It is easy to lovo children.
One of the chief reasons is that pity is /ikin to love. AND ON ’
