The Atlanta News says the law yers of St. Louis are just now watching-with interest a new in stance of civilization developing faster than law. Some genius of the Missouri met ropolis invented ancl sold a tele- phone user’s device to prevent the free use of the telephone by non- subscribers. The apparatus holds down the hook upon which the re ceiver hangs and will not relense it until abickle has been dropped into a certain designated slot. When, however, such a coin is put into the slot the hook becomes free and the telephone works like anyother instrument of its kind. Because business men and even housewives find much annoyance in the constant requests ot outsiders for permission to use their phone, the device has proven very popular, and in sqme instances so lucrative that it more than paid for itself and for the phone service. Recently a telephone company became aware of the use of the device, and, in the face of the fact that it had protested against the use of phones by non subscribers, en tered another protest against the attatchment. One suhscribor was notified that he must tnkfc it off, and refusing, his phone was removed. As a result he is sewing to have the instrument replaced, and as the whole case turns on the nickle-in- the-slot invention, and there is no law covering that point, St. Louis' lawyers are watching the affair with great interest.
