Higher Education
And the Public
Welfare
By ARTHUR T.
HADLEY, President
of Yale* University
mwpwnymwpswpm
N these days of progress and reform, when no insti
tution is allowed to pass unchallenged, the higher
educational system of the country must he prepared
to prove its usefulness if it would expect a continu
ance of public support.
| THINK THAT THERE ARE THREE DISTINCT WAY* IN
ICH HIGHER EDUCATION HELP8 THE COMMUNITY AND BY
ICH IT PROVES IT8 RIGHT TO EXIST. FIRST, IT MAKES
\ PEOPLE BETTER WORKERS IN THEIR SEVERAL OCCUPA-
N8| SECOND, IT MAKE8 THEM BETTER MEMBERS OF THE
>Y POLITIC; THIRD, IT MAKE8 THEM BETTER MEN MOR-
LY AND SPIRITUALLY.
And I also believe that those good results of higher education
ich are least obvious and least easily measured in dollars and
are the very ones which have most fundamental importance
the nation as a whole.
The student who goes out of a school of the more modem type
ms for the moment less well equipped than his rival who has
.died in an office or in an old fashioned school of the strictly tech-
' character.
[e .does not know the daily routine of the business. He cannot
his hand and his tongue from one thing to another with the
ckness which the technically educated man possesses. But as
g6es on this disadvantage ceases, and soon the balance shows
on the other side.
BUT THE CHANCE OF GAIN TO THE INDIVIDUAL
NOT THE ONLY THING TO BE CONSIDERED IN
STDIATTNG THE RELATIVE VALUE OF SCIENTIFIC
AINING AS COMPARED WITH THAT WHICH IS
URELY TECHNICAL.
Its advantage to the nation as a whole is inestimably larger; for
is upon this higher scientific training that national progress is
ily dependent
HE MAN WHO HA8 BEEN EDUCATED TO BE A CREATURE
ROUTINE GENERALLY CLING8 TO OLD METHOD8; THE MAN
iO UNDERSTANDS THE THEORY OF HI8 BU8INE88 CAN DE
LOP NEW ONES. THE GAIN TO THE NATION IN HAVING IT8
DU8TRY PROGRE88IVELY DIRECTED AND CONDUCTED IS
METHING WHICH CANNOT BE MEA8URED IN DOLLAR8 AND
NTS.
If there is any one characteristic which distinguishes the liberally
ucated man from his fellows, it is that breadth of view which
Vents him from being absorbed in his own pursuits to the exclu-
of the wider range of human interests.
A COLLEGE COURSE, IF PROPERLY DIRECTED,
ST ALSO TRAIN ITS STUDENTS IN THE OBLIGA-
OF CITIZENSHIP. THIS FUNCTION IS MORE
ORTANT IN AMERICA THAN ANYWHERE ELSE.
AMERICAN'DOES NOT FULFILL HIS WHOLE DUTY
HE IS ONLY A SKILLFUL SPECIALIST OR EVEN
HE IS A GOOD BUSINESS MAN AND NOTHING
ORE. HE HAS A BROADER DUTY AS PART OF A
OVEREIGN PEOPLE.
The higher education will do little toward mfiking more efficient
tizens unless it makes at the same time broader and better men.
It must so inspire those who come under its influence that they
apply- in the conduct of the larger affairs of the community
principles of morals which are recognized as obligatory upon
in our relation to our families and our neighbors.
All intelligent study of science, whether it be physics or biology,
chology or history, should train a man in that RESPECT FOR
W WHICH IS THE BEST ANTIDOTE TO CAPRICIOUS
ELF WILL ON THE PART OF THE INDIVIDUAL.
