Why Should the Spirit of Mortal
Be Sad?
Oh, why should the spirit of mortal be
sad,
When the heart of all nature rings ten
der and glad—
When the hearts of your brothers are
gentle and brave,
Why should you look forward in hope
to the grave?
Oh, why should the spirit of mortals be
' , sad,
And why should we weep over a chance
that we had?
The past doesn’t offer its treasures
again,
But sorrows are lost with the hopes
that they are slain.
Oh, why should we weep over the- fol
lies of yore?
The stars in the sky are as bright as
before—
The sun and the moon and the birds of
the air ,
All bids us “Go forward, otherdays are
\ as fair.”
Why should we keep silent? The roses
adorn
The blushing red cheeksof each dewey-
lit morn,
The robin, the partridge, the lark and
the dove
All signs of contentment, of peace and
of love.

The Village Four Hundred
They’re not as great as Gotham’s set—

We have them—A Four Hundred t
They buy the finest for their dress,
In choosing take much pains,
Some faces fair, I do declare—
But where, oh, where’s the brains?
They walk the streets in showy garb—
With watches, rings and chains—
They look all right by day or night,
But where, oh, where’s the brains?
They look so stiff as on they go,
They seem distressed with pains,
They have no use, is their excuse,
For knowledge or for brains.
But still they’re leaders in their set—
These shallow minds and swains—
Unnoticed go both fast and slow
In search of all but brains.

And great’s the cost of buying boose.
