"In 1881, while resident tin Gnuolle
peninsula, the northern portion of the
mngiitlleeiit Island of Now Britain, In
the- south Pttcllic.il had'tunny oppor
tunities of witnessing both cockatoos
and wild pigeons drinking salt water.
1 was stationed ut a pice called Knv
bairn, the then •furthest oat’ trading
station 011 the whole island, and ns I
hml but little work to do l found
plenty of time to study bird life In the
vicinity. Parrots of several varieties,
nil of beautiful plumage, were plenti
ful, and great flocks of while cocka
toos frequented the rolling, grassy
downs which lay between uiy home
and the German bend station In
Blanche bay, twenty utiles distant,
while the heavy frost of ,tbe littoral
was the haunt of thousands of pigeons.
These pigeons, though not so large ns
the Sntiionu or eastern Polynesian bird,
formed nit agreeable change of diet for
us white traders, nnd by walking about
fifty yards from one's door half n
dozen or more could bo shot iu us
muny minutes.
“My nearest neighbor was u German,
nml otic day when we' were walking
along the beach towurd his station I
jtotlced some hundreds of pigeons fly
down from the forest, settle on the
margin' of the water nnd d.afft with
apparent enjoyment. The harbor at
tills spot being utmost,Inrnlloekod nnd
the water as smooth ns glass mid with
out the faintest ripple, the birds were
ftinblod to drink without wetting their
plumage. My neighbor, who had lived
many yenrs In New Britain, told me
that this drinking of sen water wns
common to both cockatoos and pigeons
alike, and that on same occasions the
beaches would he lined with them, the
Cockatoos, uot only drinking, but*bath
ing, and apparently enjoying them
selves greatly. During the next six
months, especially when the weather
was calm and rainy. -I frequently no
ticed pigeons nnd cockatoo* come to tye.
salt witter to drink.
“At first I thought that ■ ns fresh
water In' many places babbled up
through the sand at.low tide the blrd8
were not really drinking the sea water,
but by watching closely I distinctly
saw them walk across .these tiny run
nels without making uuy 'attempt to
drink. Then, too, the .whole of the
Gazelle peninsula Is cut up by count
less stream* of wntcr,' nnd rain falls
throughout the year us a rule. WUnt
causes ibis uuusual habit of drinking
sea water? Another peculiarity of the
New Britain aud New Ireland pigeon
Is its fondness for the chill pepper
berry. During three months of the
year, when these berries are ripe, tho
birds’ crops are full of them, and often
their flesh Is so pungent and smells so
strongly of tbs chill as to be quite un
eatable."—Chambers’ Journal.
