WEATHER FORECAST:
For Georgia: Cloudiness.
We sincerely hops that the Sen
ate will not kill the Hon. Joe Hill
Hall's anti'free puss bill. It should
become a law by all means.
Millard Lee, the aluyer of Miss
Suttlea, of Fulton county, has been
refused a new trial by the supreme
cdurt and he will pay the just
penalty of death for the crime some
time in December.
Governor Terrell has issued his
proclamation declaring Thursday
Nov. 27, Thanksgiving Day, a legal
holiday in Georgia and requesting
the people to abstain from their
secular occupations and assemble in
their houses of worship or about
their family altars and unite in
tbonks to the Almighty for His
many blessings.
T. H, Overby, of Cochran, who
has been missing several days, was
insured for $30,000 in the National
Lite Insurance Co., of which com.
pany he was an agent. The com*
pany. has been called upon to puy
the amount, but are investigating
the case before doing so. It is
believed by some that he was
robbed and murdered and his body
concealed.
Thursday, November 27th, is
Thanksgiving day, which will be
observed with appropriate exercises
at the Methodist church in this city.
As is customary with some, would
it not be a good idea for everybody
to decorate the church with the
best fruits of the harvest ? We have
great things to be thankful for and
actions sometimes speak more
forceful than words. Wbat about
It ? It would certainly be a pretty
•cone to look upon.
Roland B. Molineaux, the ptin
cipal in one of the most interesting
murder cases, is a free man again
—after having been tried twice lor
the same crime. He had been
sentenced to death, and after
having stayed in jail for- two or
years more, was given bis freedom
by the second jury in twentyfive
minutes after going to tbeir room.
He was charged with sending a
poisoned package to a man he
wished to murder. The package
fell into the hands of a woman who
died from the effects of the poison.
It is said that the conviction was
the result of perjured testimony.
A Prosperous Bank.
We were around at the Bank of
Vienna yesterday, and were shown
from the books that the net profits
above all expenses for the year just
closed were 28 per cent on ’ the
Capital. How many banks in the
State can beat this record?
WAR ON THE HIP POCKET HABIT.
There are in many parts of Geor
gia evidences of u rising determina
tion to suppress the vicious habit
of carrying concealed weapons.
We have observed recently that
our superior court judges in their
charges to grand juries have laid
grert stress upon the necessity oi a
strict enforcement of the law on
this subject, and the iflet that such
an enforcement is impossible unless
the grand juries do their duty,
Up to a somewhat recent date
the carrying of pistols and other
concealed weapons was regarded
by the average citizen ns a com.
Duratively trivial offense and there
was a little disposition, either to
find indictments on this account or
to press them when found. But
there has been a wonderful and a
most wholesome change in public
opinion relative to the concealed
weapon habit.
Grand jurors have begun to real*,
ize their duty in the matter and are
doing it in a manner that contrasts
finely with their former indifference
The other officers of the law
generally have moved forward
quite as notably in an organized
and systematic effort to climate the
loaded pistol pocket a
Judges of superior, county and
city courts, solicitors general and
local police officers have joined
forces and are co-operating to make
the law a terror to the ’’pistol
toter” and all othei bearers of con
cealed weapons. It was high time
that this reform should begjn and it
should be carried on until in every
county ot Georgia any man whose
nature or habits would impel him
to lug a pistol with him wherever
he goes will be afraid to do so. It
goes without saying thut the habit
ual "pistol toter” is a bad citizen,
as he presistently violates and defies
the law.;
Such a fellow should he made
scarce in every community that
cursed by his presence. There 16 no
telling hoW much ot the violence
and bloodshed that afflicts this state
is directly attributable to that habit
which only a coward or a ‘‘bully
will indulge in, but the proportion
is great.
The statute law and the moral
law alike should be invoked against
this offense. Whenever any man
becomes notorious for carrying con
cealed weapons, he should not only

have to face certain and 'severe
punishment, but should lose the
respect of all good citizens.
How can' we expect the lower
classes to refrain from Ibis danger*
ous indulgence so long as quasi*
respectable persons are often guilty
of it?
Respectability, instead of miti
gating this offense, should be held
to increase its gravity. \
It should cease to be a misdemean
or for which no severer penalty
than the payment of a fine need be
expected.
Unless harsher measures are used
we need not expect this prevalent
curse abated very materially.
The concealed weapon habit is
the source ot many crimes and must
be treated with due regurd to its
viciousness and ks possibilities
for evil.
We are glad to observe that when
persons arrested by the Atlanta po
lice aie found with concealed wea
pons they are, in many instances,
bound over to await the action of
the grand jury after they have been
called to account for their offenses
against the city ordinances.
This should be the invariable rule
The police commission, the recor
der and all the officers of the city
police force.ahould issue orders to
this effect and see that they are
carried out. The crusade upon the
loaded pistol pocket cannot be
made too vigorous or too sweeping.
