C., states that there is no doubt of the election of Representative Cannon to the speakership of the house of representatives. THE UNCERTAINTY OF JURIES. The uncertainty which attends the deliberations of the average jury was most forcibly demonstra- ted the other day in New York City when the jury, into which the life or death of Rotund B Molineaux had been placed for the alleged poisoning of a Mrs. Adams some two years ago in that city. In the first trial of Molineaux, which lusted for, perhaps, three months, the jury dually found him guilty. The case was appealed to to the supreme court and the Verdict of the lower couit set aside and a new trial granted. The case was then taken up ip the court in which it was first tiied. After weeks of hearing testimony of hand-writing experts, etc., the jury brought m a verdict of not guilty, and Molineaux is now a free man. Tuking this incident as an exam ple, how can a man who is brought into court be assured that he will receive justice? What guarantee has he that a blundering jury will decide the case according to the law and the evidence f P1NEHURST, GEORGIA. BARFIELD & HORNE, Prop’s. --DEALERS IN- General Merchandise, OUR STOCK IS FRESH, CLEAN AND WELL KEPT, OUR HOUSE IS WELL LIGHTED AND HEATED. MAKE OUR STORE—THE POSTOFFICE--YOUR HEADQUARTERS WHEN YOU COME TO TOWN. The children of Atlanta have petitioned the management of the street railway service for a cheaper car fare, Atlunta can alwuys be depended on to do the unusunl. The house passed the Australian ballot bill Wednesday by a vote of 93 10 33- An effort was made to have the bill disfranchise all but those who can read, but the legis lators fought shy of the proposi tion. The Atlanta Constitution of Wednesday says that it is possible that the legislature will appro priate $330,000 to the asylum, that amount having been agreed upon by the committee having the mat ter in charge. It is now settled beyond ques tion that the republican party in Congress vyill make a bard effort to cut down the South’s representa tion in that body. Of course, if this plan is determined on, noth ing can prevent. r ■ The attempted assinntion of King Leopold, of Belgium, turns out to be a huge fuke. It appears that the king’s popularity hus been on the wane for sometime with his people, and he took this means to ingratiate himself ipto the good graces of -his people. It seems the ways and schemes of roynlity are not much removed from those of common, everyday people. ' The democratic party should not be discouraged over the results of the recent elections. Notwith standing the loud boasting of the republican newspapers, the leuders of the party; who are in a position to view the internal workings of tilings, aie not so sungume over the future success of the party. Dis sensions are cropping out in places unlooked for. The president is not in accord with a majority of his party in congress on the tariff issue. Being gifted with a longer and clearer vision than they are, he has seen certain signs of the times which have decided him into a determination to cull an extra ses sion of congress for the purpose of tuking some steps in regard to a revision of the tariff. It would not be surprising, from present indica tions, if a split over this question should occur. Chairman Griggs, of the national democratic congressional commit tee, is due much praise from his iriends and party in Georgia, his native state, as well as from all Over the union , for hi* splendid management of the congressional campaign. Although the tide was against him, Chairman Griggs did valiant service for bis party and succeeding in materially reducing the republican majority in the national house of representatives. In every community in the whole civilized wot Id, where as many as one dozen people live, yob will find in that community so many sore head* and chronic kickers. Never is any new enterprise broached or any public improvement talked of but that the kicker and the sore head will at once come to the front with his loud opposition. He is agin anything and everything. And almost without fail, upon in Yeitigatiou, it will be found that he pays less taxes than any man in the Community and makes bis wife chop the wood. A brand new idea ba» been orig inated in Waycross in the nature of a “Workingman’s Co-operative Grocery Store." The movement was started by the employes of the Atlantic Coast Line shops. The plan is to organize und charter a company under the laws of the state oi Georgia with a paid in capital of not leas than $3,500. Shares are to be issued at the par value of five dollars each, and every person in Waycross Is eligible to become a member of the company except a merchant'or a capitalist. It is claimed by ' the promoters of the co-operative store that a great dea|of trade will .be kept in Way- cross by the organization, ot this company that has formerly gone to Savannah and other cities. This is certainly an unique plun, and should succeed. ‘ Why should not the next demo' cratic candidate for president be-a southern man ? Is the south ever going to be recognized? Southern voters constitute the brawn und sinew of the democratic party, without which the organization would have to go out of business, and yet not since the civil war has a southern man headed the demo cratic national ticket. Is there any justice in this? Is there any policy in it? Southern men will not always submit Jo furnishing the votes and the other fellow getting the pudding. LUCK IN THIRTEEN. We seldom see anything of hilii these days of the falling leaves and juckfrost. He it liken unto the imigrating bird, When the chilly blasts of winter begin their sighing through the leafless branches of the trees, he betakes himself unto a warmer and more congenial clime. Work? Well, I guess not. Not Mr. B. P. He wasn’t built on those dimensions. But if there is anything of a liquid nature hanging around with a iaint smell of the worm, Mr. B. P. is your man every day in the year. But poor old bum, his days seem to be numbered. He is of few days and full of worry. One can hardly pick up a daily paper now days without reading of one or more suicides, and the most striking feature of this fact is that u great majority ot these suicides are young people, early m the race of life, and at that stage of existence when life should be most dear and full of happiness aud hope for the future. It does seem that tlure is an epidemic, of suicide sweeping over this country, just as, at times, there are epidemics of murder. =$25.00= IN COLD CASH OIVEN AWAY.
