WHO AfeE THE
HAPPY?
By Hon. Vv. uuUtUCE COCKRAN,
Orator and Ex-Congressman
j$ir<rrir’i | |iiii | pii'i||ii'inuiii|»imiati|iitiTpsiitisnYwynniviii , |m'HU‘miuiipinnrm|rPTlHM|Hli
life can be claimed successful u'nless it be a hajipy one.
Happiness is the object of universal endeavor, and hap
piness alone i3 success. .
Of course when we speak of a happy life we do
not .mean a condition of uninterrupted bliss. Sickness,
death and other .disasters lie in wait for every man, even the most
successful, making difficult the progress which overcomes them,
wounding and blistering the feet which theyj cannot arrest.
THE CUP OP 8UCCESS CANNOT BE QUAFFED WITHOUT
TA8TING 80ME BITTER DREGS OF DISAPPOINTMENT. PERFECT
HAPPINE88 18 NOT OF THIS EARTH. BY A SUCCESSFUL LIFE
WE MEAN NOT ONE WHICH HAS ESCAPED ALL 80RR0W, BUT
ONE WHICH BY COMPARISON WITH OTHERS HAS ACHIEVED A
LARGER DEGREE OF HAPPINESS. ''
What fa happiness?
Is it fame?
Some wise men hold that fame Js posthumous and notoriety con
temporaneous, but without pausing to consider the grounds of that
belief it fa certain that the only fruit which fame or notoriety brings
to its living possessor fa the sense that his fellow men aro curious
about him. NO ONE CAN BE CONSIDERED FAMOUS
UNTIL HE IS DEAD. A, REWARD WHICH CAN BE
ENJOYED ONLY BEYOND THE GRAVE IS NOT A
TEMPORAL SUCCESS AND THEREFORE IS’NOT WITH
IN THE 'PURVIEW OF THIS DISCUSSION.
Is power happiness?
I am inclined tq think that it is far from being so. Ask the pos
sessor of it, and he will tell you that it fa an obstacle to all con
tentment. Power is a good deal like commercial credit. A man
can possess it only when lie refrains from using it f6r his bwn benefit.
An attempt to utilize it for personal gratification destroys it.
Is knowledge happiness?
The utmost that a life devotecl to study can hope to accomplish
fa to discover the fountain of knowledge. Not one of us can ever
hope to slake his thirst at it. THEREFORE, IF KNOWLEDGE
BE HAPPINESS, THEN INDEED IS HAPPINESS UNAT
TAINABLE.
Is nvealth happiness?
Look at those who possess it .and tell me if you think they are
a happy race. Who that has observed in these catacombs of modern
cities called safe deposits the owners of millions, gloomy as the pas
sages through which they move silently, alfaiost furtively, to com
partments appropriately named vaults, where, in an isolation abso
lute as a grave, they count their securities or change them, WILL
SAY THAT, JUDGED BY APPEARANCES, THE VERY
RICH LEAD LIVES OF UNCLOUDED JOY?
If wealth, power, fame and knowledge are not happiness, in what
does it consist ? Is it unattainable ? No. So far from being unat
tainable, it fa not even difficult to reach. It fa at our feet, and, as
often liapmns, we stumble over the substance which fa close to us
while straining after its shadow in the distance.
HAPPINE83 CON8I8T8 NOT IN OUR POSSE88ION3, BUT IN
OUR8ELVE3; NOT IN WHAT WE HAVE, BUT IN WHAT WB
ARE. I THINK HAPPINESS MAY BE DEFINED AS ABSORPTION
IN 80ME FORM OF EFFECTIVE LABOR.
You may say some men are unhappy though they work every
day-9-nay, some men declare their occupations are sources of discon
tent because they are arduous. Do not be deceived. A man’s
hands may be busy, yet he may be unhappy, hut it fa because his
mind is not occupied by his task. Where all the faculties, mental
and physical, fare absorbed in any form of industry, there fa no time
to feel discontent and still less time to express it
HAPPINESS IS EFFECTIVE LABOR. OUR POSSES
SIONS ARE OFTEN SOURCES OF DISAPPOINTMENT,
BUT THE LABOR SPENT IN ACQUIRING THEM IS
ALWAYS A SOURCE OF SATISFACTION.
