Tomorrow is New Year’s and good •esolutions aro in order. No better -(■solution could be made than to se cure a policy, through M. E. Rushin, in tlie old Mutual Benilt. m Competition is so sharp, now-a-days, in ail lines of business that it is difficult to accumulate property ns formerly, but there is one wny in which to in crease one’s estate right now and with out much effort and that is to see M. JJ. Bushin for a policy in the old Mu tual Benefit Life Insurance Company. Rev. Wesley Lane filled the pulpit . at tiie Methodist church Sunday night. Our people are always glad to have the opportunity of hearing this good man preach. Rev. Lane will have charge of tho 1’inehurst circuit this year, having exchanged places with Rev. C. W. Pound, of Bnriiesville, was hero in Vienna dis tributing some of his latest circulars concerning his new song book. Whentvor Judge Pound’s name is mentioned it fills and thrills my heart with nn inspiration of love for music, as I was brought up and'tutored under his able instructions in old Pike county. As stagin'! is my profession, I feel in clined to speak to your anxious resd rs concerning music. I notice in travel ing over the country (and going from convention to convention, and from singingB to singings) that the people of the country in general hasn’t the edu cation sufficient to read music intelli gently, and the larger portion of the people Just simply don’t know nnything •- about the first principles of music. I must say that music is a talent, and where that talent is implanted on the hearts and souls of people, that talent should be developed. There are not many teachers of mutio In our southern counties of Georgia that understand how to set poetry to music. They do not understand the true principals of the primary department of music;and in this glorious Southern clime where the good old fathers and mothers, to gether with' the flourishing youth have the privilege of going to church, and not ana in 25 can raise a long, short or common metre tune. What’s the matter? The church seems to be grum bling about the music; the pastor feels cramped because of ignorance prevail ing along this line; And when a school of ten or twelve days is taught some of them are dissatisfied becau-e they did not learn all about it. • The truth is, the people wont patronize a first-clats school,' because they have to go dov it in their pockets. A cheap singing school is like cheap goods, it don’t last very long. Good vocal singing is worth listning to, ns well ns instrumental music. The Psalms of David is filled with songs to tlie Lord, and today we have poets and bards that are ohiming praises to the same all powerful being that the Psalmist did, but here in south Georgia they are few and fnr between* I long to sec the day when music, vocal music will flourish as it never has, and people can sing, and understand as they have never understood. Yours for success. Pitts, Ga. Chas. W. Cooper PRESERVED FOODS. “The chief chemist of the depart ment of agriculture,” says Profess or Winters of Baltimore, “haB de cided to investigate the methods df food preservation in this country. Only a short time ago Germany prohibited the use of borax in pre serving meats. If people knew the processes which their meat under went, they would hesitate about eating so much of it. Take corned beef, for /instance. A flank of beef is put in a vat filled with a solution of borax, saltpeter and hard water, and it is left to soak several weeks before ready to eat. What kind of n digestion could stand that? Al most all moats are preserved by borax. Salicylic acid, also used in preserving some things, is a power ful stomach destroyer, and there are other substances used daily by ‘pure food dealers’ that are equally de structive. A rigorous investigation, followed by a genuine reform, would vastly benefit the public health,”—New York Tribuno. Her Girl Friends. “Did y6u notice what a peculiar walk Laura is cultivating?” “Yes. Poor girl, she is deter mined to attract attention some way.”—Philadelphia Bulletin. No Doubt About It. “A married man can live on less than n single man.” “Of course.
