SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 1903,
The society in New York iigivs
ing fancy balls costing thousands of
dollars while the poor people ot
that great city are suffering tearful
agonies from cold.
The candidate for office who
underestimates the influence of the
weekly press is, to s.iy the least, at
a very material disadvantage. Its
influence for either good or bad is
most powerful.
After many unsuccessful at
temps, Macon has at lust secured a
sufficient appropriation, from the
government with which to erect a
suitable and commodious federal
building and postoffice.
The trusts are catching it from
all sides. The democrats, the
republicans, the populists and the
mugwumps are all busily engaged
in throwing bricks at the monster.
Let the good work go on, and
probably out of it all come ueflnutc
result* may come.

Mark Hanna will never run lor the

\Vy who live iu the Sunny South
huve no idea of the horrible suffer
ing of the people of the frozen
North who cannot buy coal at any
price. It would be fearful even, in
this state if wit could not secure
coni or. fuel.but in the. nil' cold
North it ib tenfold worse.
\
An effort is being made to have
Congress confiscate all the coul
mines nnd transportation lines
necessary to relieve the coal fam
ine. Some such step as this should
be taken at once by the proper
authorities. The people will not
hold themselves within bounds
much longer.
L
The terrible coal fumine is cuus
ing serious conditions in the north,
especially in the large cities. Train
loads of coal itre being seised by
suffering people and distributed
among them. The situation is
becoming dreadful in some places,
and if some means of relief are not
speedily forthcoming, riots and
serious disturbance. may- be ex
pected.'
A man may lend-* life of shame
, a-id pregnant with crimes; he may
. choose us his associates men of his
own ilk—men of sin and sharni
but when he comes to die, aud looks
in the face of the grim and merciless
reaper, death, who does he then
want at his bedside? Not bis old
chum and associates in sin—not
they, though they may be bit warm
personal friends—but he wants the
Christian, man and woman—a child
ol God. I Although he may have
mocked ahd scoffed at Christianity
when lie wits in health and strength
—that is ail gone now, when the
teurful reality of death stare* him
in the face, lie wants someone-who
can give him comfort and tell him
things he has failed to learn in his
ill-spent life.
A PERTINENT FACT.
.A great many people, in fact,
we believe, a majority of them, ex
cuse xnd even honor a woman for.
the dreadful crime of murder when
committed in defense of her repu
tation. A woman who kills the
man who has spoken slightingly
of her character is lauded as a
heroines*, and it Ib seldom, indeed,
that a jury is found that will con
vict her.
Nevertheless, it cannot be
claimed that this is the proper
course for her to persue under such
circumstances. It seems to us, -if
she be married, that the; right
course would be for her to go to
her: husband in her trouble and
inform him, fully of the circum
stances. If she be a virtous and
good.woman, it seems that this
would be the first thmgto occur to
her mind when she learned of the
defamation ot her character. If
she were innocent, she would have
no fear of his knowing of the
entire circumstances, and shs
should most naturally look to him
for protection.
She has no right to hide, it from
her husband, but it is her duty as a
wife to inform him of the matter,
and let.him, not her, take such
steps as he deems best to right the
wrong.
Why should a true, wife conical
such a thing from her husband?
She might hesitate for fear of the
consequences, but if she intends to
wreak vengence by herself,
she could not render that excuse.
Yet, inexcusable as the terrible
crime is, hardly any jury will con
vict a woman for murder under
such circumstances.
Mrs. Carson, who killed Robert
Rigsby in Macon this week, ha*
been released 01, a f 1,000 bond.
The coroner’s jury, brought in a
verdict of voluntary manslaughter.
It is said a great number of people
in Macon are dissatisfied with the
verdict, but it is fairly safe to say
that Mrs. Carson will not be dealt
with at all harshly in the courts.
The coroner's virdict clearly dem
onstrates that fact.
Gov. Terrell will attend a meet
ing of th* famous Gridiron Club in
Washington the last of this month.
It will be a brilliant gathering and
pur governor will shine with the
best of them.
The council investigation . into
the doings ol the police commis
sioners of Atlanta is bringing out
some rather interesting develop
T‘Tt seeips that the ' board
bus; resolved itself into a political
machine.
Not to have it raid that be is
unjust, the president has named a
negro as assistant United States
attorney ut Boston. This will not
appease the wrath of the Southern
people in the least, because they
lioow it is simply done for effect
and nothing else.
Congress has done its full duty
in declaring the duty off imported
cohI, so that now foreign ship
meats of this necessity can be bad
for a reasonable price, and of
course, it will cause the price of
die home production to decrente in
proportion. This uction should
lend to others of a beneficial nature
to the people.
Wc have Witnessed an example
this week of what these powerful
combinations of capital are bring
ing, this country tu. We suw the
people in their suffering rise up
and take matters in their own
hands. They bod been gored to
tbe last ditch and human nature
would stand no more. This is only
a lesson. If some remedy is not
speedily found for this evil, graver
thing* will happen.
Despite the protests of President
Roosevelt, the republicans of Utah
hnve selected Apostle Reed Smoot
as a United States senator from that
state. Apostle Smoot is a high
official of. the Mormon church, and
it was upon tbit account that the
president opposed hit election.
People are now wondering what
the republicans in the senate will
do about it. The memory of Mormon
Roberts' dismissal tram the house
of representatives is still fresh in
tbe .ltiivJs ol Unpeople. But, it
will be. remembered also-that he
was a democrat. It Is most likely
that a strong protest against the
seating of Smoot will - go up from
all over the county, and many peo
ple are anxious to see what course
tbe republicans in the senate will
adopt in regard to the matter.
Former' Lieutenant Governor
Tillman shot and instantly, killed
Editor N. Q. Gonzales on the
streets ot Columbia, S. C., Thurs
day. It was a cowardly and cold
blooded jnurder, and the friends of
the murdered man threaten to
lynch Tillman. Meettng-Gonzales
on the street, Tillman shot him
down like a dog. Gonzales was
one of the most prominent politic
ians in the state.
We earnestly hope that the
president will proceed, with iiis
contemplated plan to appoint
negroes to several responsible . po
litical positions in tbe north. Not
that we have any hard Reeling
against them, but we want them to
have, the save the same experience
with negro office holders that the
South has had, and then we believe
they will sympathize more with
Southern people in their trouble.
It is said that among a majority
of the royal families of Europe
there exist scandals of a greater or
less degree of notoriety. It seems
that above all others royalily with
its blue blood should be free from
scandals ot any sort, but it it not
so. Far from it. Within the last
few years tbe world hat been re
galed with social scandals of the
worst character, and more are very
likely to follow.
There seems to be no doubt that
President Roosevelt is an enemy ol
the trusts, if we are to credit the
newspaper di«putches from Wash
ington. He is credited with a sin
cere desire to curb the monopolies
<84 rbtiffg tfieiii under proper
federal restriction. It is to< be
hoped that he will continue tbe-
policy he has inaugurated along
this line and not go back on the
people at Abe critical moment..

An old crusty bachelor is the meanest
thing I can imagine. A man who. is
incrpable ot love is just a sort of man,
lacking about three-fourths of the
material whloh.goes.to make a true
man. How. can a fellow enjoy life
unless he can enjoy the heavenly bliss
of loving some sweet woman?

Next to an old bachelor, a frisky wid

Imngines every unmarried woman in
the community is just dying for love of
him, nnd he spends a good fortune of
his time in trying to look pretty and
rubbernecking at every pasting lady.
