ROOSEVELTS’ NEORO POLICY. -
It seems that President JLoosevelt
is determined to rub it in on the
Southern people and those of his
critics who have criticised him for
his outrageous actibns lately relative
to the colored brother.
Does Roosevelt believe he can
force the people to accept and adopt
bis views on this question? Does
he believe that he can obliterate
the prejiduce of generations against
negro equality and compel a whole
nation to discard its present social
status and adopt a new regime that
will meet his approbation? Is he
egotistic enough to thihk he can
revolutionize the social laws and
customs of his country, and himself
create a criterion for the people ?
From his actions we are driven to
one or two views of the matter.
Oiie is to answer the above questions
in the affirmative and accept it as a
fact, and the other is that he is too
reckless and headstrong to consider
consequences, and' wishes to show
his contempt and independence of
all opposition and criticism. \,Ve
are inclined (0 the latter conclusion,
however, as it does not seem possi
ble that any sane person could
entertain such a wild theory.
It is hard to have any respect for
man who wilfully and, it seems,
maliciously tramples all laws-of
decency and self-respect under his
feet. If lie has no respect for
himself, it was most certainly his
duty to show some degree of respect
and sympathy for the feelings of
his guests whom lie hud invited to
the White House.
fie need not have expected the
Southernors there to.do anything
else but retire when they found
that in prder to greet their presi
dent, they would be compelled to
stand side by side with three dusky
female' Etheopians q.td their blffck
escorts, who stood "chinning” and
smirking ut the great mad, while
themselves and wives utid daughters
had to stand back in the line behind
them and awnit theii pleasure.
It was too much for decency and
self-respect to benr, and so they
quietly withdrew.

THE FUTURE OF GEOR
GIA CANE SYRUP.
Albany Herald:
No South Georgia farm product is
aiming to the front more rapidly than
cane syrup. No more careful attention
is being paid by some of the section’s
most lilt Uligcnt and progressive farm-
ri lo any ciup than to sugar cane, while
improved processus for the manufacture
of syrup are being generally introduced.
Thero is a wldo and increasing de
mand for the best grade ot syrup,
For years past the maple product has
practically enjoyed a monopoly in this
Deldrbelng pronounced by epicures the
most palstablesyrup manufactured,and
as such unquestionably accepted by
tho public. The supply of maple syrup
of the highest quality has been less than
the demand, and there have been rank
impostures on tho market In the shape
ot cheap adulterations.
Tlie greatest stumbling block whioh
our nativo syrup 'has found 'In its
pathwny to popularity, is lack ol enter
prise on tlie part of our farmer* and
other* who prepare the product tor the
market. This trouble has frequently
been pointed out. Tlie average manu
facturer persistently putB up hi* syrup
in old kegs and barrels that have pre
viously contained vinegar, eider or
spirituous liquors, placing it on the
market In that unattractive sliape. By
degrees, however,the more en terpriaing
farmers have tried sealing their syrup
in fresh tins or bottles, and have, in
every ease, found the experiment un
expectedly successful.
Now, for the first time in the history
of the south, we find Georgia cane syrup
in tins, quoted in tho regular litt of
brokago firms and wholesale pruviilon
dealers. And it is gratifying to-note
that, while the annual supply it increas
ing, the price hold* up. A really good
article is worth more today than it,wis
several yeara ago.
Georgia cane syrup seems to be forg
ing to the front It is all, right, and
there Is bound to be a place for it in the
commercial work! The writer hot scon
green cane syrup manufactured and
bottled in an adjoining county last
month, that will hold ita own with the
best article ever made from Canadian
or New England maple sap. South
Georgians will find nothing remarkable"
in this statement, and the rest of the
country is finding out tho value ot the
genuine Georgia article..
