A press’ ditpntch sent out to_the

generally expressed opinion there
that Jim Tillman will never be
convicted for the murder of Editor

the fiends of the dead man do not
believe that Tillman will ever be
convicted ot hit crime.
Just why such bfilief ar this

HOBSON HAS REtlGNED.
Failing to get himself put upon I

an extent that he was incapacitated - - - .
for duty, bujt after being examined Physicians Cou|d
convicted, of a
blooded murder. While It is
admitted that Gonzales did’ at n
lime.in the past give him great
provocation of sufficient character
and harshness to precipitate un
attack on Tillman’* part, it i*
claimed by no one that anything
later had passed between the two
men.
If one man personally assaults
nother and is offsied no resistance
by the party assaulted at the tqne,
but after several months have pass
ed, this party meets his assailur.'
and shoots him down without a
word ot warning, could it be
•tainted that be was acting, in
self-defense, or that.be was in the
remotest degree justifiable in his
action ?
Such a plea would be ridiculous.
Why then, and upon''what
ground can the opinion exist that
Tillman will n^t-be convicted
We can only account for it its
one way, and that is, (hat thp peo
ple are in sympathy with Tillman
If such is a fact, it may, indeed be
hard matter toonviot him.
But it seems si runge—very
strange—that such a state of affairs
can.possibly exist. Public senti
ment is most generally accurate
nod just, but if Tillman is the
object of its sympathy in this .in
stance, we shall be strongly tempt
ed to believs that even public opin
ion may err greitously at times.
Another reason might be given
for the existence for this belief,
that the court! are corruptible and
that with money nnd influential
friends Tillman may expect to es
cape punishment. But we discard
this suggestion as not, worthy of
serious thought, ns we have- a
higher opiniou of the courts of
South Carolina than to think that.
We cun only wait and see ’ the
