Helen Oldfield Bays it is the
general opinion of those who know;
that the first year of wedded life
practically answers the question,
“la marriage a failure? ” And the
honeymoon begins the test. She
claims that the first three or four
■Weeks—or the honeymoon—it the
most difficult period of alll -She
thinks women make a mistake in
clinging too close to a man and
says that even'gn angel may be
tiresome when one can never get
out of the shadow of its wings.

When Tom Loyless takes hold
of the editorial end of the Augusta
Chronicle and Mr. Cabiness lays
hold of the business end, they
will infuse new life into that old
lady and show those Augustans
how to get out a first-class paper.

Col. John R. Cooper, of Macon,
says he believes he can fill a seat
in congress just as acceptably to
the people of the sixth district as
Mr. Bartlett, and, being red
headed and full of humor besides,
•it is calculated that he will let
Mr. Bnrtlett know that he is in
the race.

The Chicago Chronicle allows
that the only accomplishment the
negroos of the South need to learn
is that of dodging buckshot. From
recent reports from the North, it
Would seem that the negroes up
there stand slightly in need of
this accomplishment also, most
especially if he makes an effort-to

They say thero are 1,000 news
papers in the State of Knnsns,' and
out of that thousand 787 of them
will not publish a whiskey adver

papers in every'State in the Union
would follow the example of these

traffic would bo dealt a blow bo-

Some interesting figures pub
lished by the Telegraph show that
eleven railroAds converge nt Ma
con; that the immediate trado
territory of Macon contains 600,-
000 people; that 00 passenger
trains arrive at and depart from
that city daily; that in 1902 the
product of her manufacturing
plants required 15,090 freight cars
to haul it. the value of whiclv was
nearly 126,000,000. The bank
cloarings for 1002 wore $118,000,-
000. This is on imposing nrray
of figures, and they tell the story
of Macon’s groat industrial de

The Charities Convention being
held in Atlanta is a most nota
ble meeting, and many of the very
best people of the country are
present. The object of the con
vention is the betterment of man
kind, especially such of mankind
ns need aid and encouragement in
the battle of lifo; and the fact
that this great body of noble men
and women are interested enough
in this work of love and chnrity
.to come away from their homes—
some of them hundreds of miles
distant—to attend the convention
in Atlanta, speaks volumes of the
power of the Christian religion.

Will parents never leam from
terrible exjierience to cease lock
ing small children in the house to
amuse t hemselves while they mnke
n neighborly call or go fishingor
something of that sort? Wo read
that, “Kxperience is a dear teach'
or,” but it seems to be no teacher
nt all to some people, or else they
would cease doing a thing that has
time after time brought its horri
ble eonsequeuces. It is always
the same .old story. The children
are locked in the house; the pa
rents go away; the children play
- with the fire or the matches; the
house bums up and the children
.with it. Such carelesness is
spothing more nor less than crimi
nal negligence, and deserves pun-
nshment. *

Rev. Dr. Chns. Parkhurst, of New
York,_delivered the annual sermon
before the national conference' of
charities in Atlanta 8unday, and
in speaking of the, emancipation
of the negro, he said:
“There was a great deal of hero
ism in the course of the ware-North
and South—but there was not
much statesmanship in the con
struction of peace, and one of the
radical mistakes was in supposing
that altering the colored man’s
condition altered the colored man;
that letting the wolf out of the
cage alters the wolf; that substi
tuting coat and trousers for
swadling clothes makes of an infant
a man, and that emancipation not
only relieved the slave of his
fetters, but mode him a citizen.’’

No sooner does the talk and
rumbling of one war die away than
( «imors and dire forebodings of
another arise, and the world is
continually listening to rumors of
war thick and fast among the
notions of the earth'. One cannot
keep from thinking of the
prediction in the bible which pro
ceeds the end of time. “There will
be wars nnd rumors of wars,” it
says, and if that prediction is not
true today, it will never be true.
Wo do not mean ’to argue from
this that the end of the world is
near at hand, because this predic
tion has been used time and time
again with equal force, perhaps
ever since time began. There l)as
never been a time in the history
of the world when there were not
wars and rumors of wars” so far
as that is concerned, but still 011c
will think of it when ho sees the
irend of the timos.

The session of the Cane G rower’s
Convention just recently held in
Macon will long bo remembered
by thoso who attended its sessions
and also by those who will derive
the benefit from its deliberations.
At such gatherings nil the best that
is possessed in experience and
learning is put ’ forward for the
benefit of all. The knowledge that
is gained .by one man becomes the
knowledge of-nil, aud hence each
is benefitted by the other. Cane
culture is a subject of most vital
importance to the farmers of Geor
gia, and they should take advan
tage of every opportunity to en
lighten themselves thereon.
