In the year 1901 there were 6,-
880:78 miles of railroad in Georgia,
an increase of 254.70 miles over
1899 and 150.70 miles over 190p.
The mileage in 1902 was increased
somwhat and it is safe to say that
Georgia now has more than 0,000
miles of steel highway. '

Monroe Adams, the notorious
negro murderer, was hanged in
Amerious last Friday for the mur
der of his daughter. He invited
several of his special friends to
the hanging and laughed und joked
with them to the lant. Before the
cap was placed over his face he
asked for d drink qf liquor and
bmoked a cigar. Ills seemed as
unconcerned ns if' to had been
sure of living a thousand years.

According to Nnwspapordom
the American Serial Company has
earned the palm for asine propo
sitions by their latest offer to
woekly newspapers. This concern
would have the country publishers
sell “Force” to local merchants
on commission. In order that a
weekly publisher can secure
“Force advertising, he must first
soil several consignments of the
goods to tho local grocery men.
Cortainly this caps tho climax. It
is the acme of absurdity, the
height of the rediculous. This
firm will noxt bo asking publish
ers to pay them a good round
Sum for (he privilege of inserting
their dvertising matter.

It will be a cold day in August
when tho South votos for Grover
Cleveland for president again.
The South is thoroughly satisfied
with what they hnvo had of Cleve
land and does lmt caro for any
more, thank you. The South got
onough of’ closed factories, cold
furnaces, no money,starvation and
ruination. She would be foolish
to send out a special return invi
tation by trying to’ put Grover
Cleveland hack in power. While
everybody else was starving during
his last term, ho got rich and
retired a bloated plutocrat . No,
thank you, Miss Nancy, we’ve had
plenty.

While a majority of New York’s
_ great papers seem to be* desirous
; of doing the South justicD in their
editorial columns, they nevertlie
less allow tho most foul cnlnmi-
nous falsehoods tt> creep into the
columns of their papers from
responsible and malicious con
tributors respecting this section.
As long ns this is kept up it will
bo exceedingly difficult for the
Southern people to believe that
they honestly desire to treat
justly and without prejudice.
Gross ignorance is responsible
however, for many of theso artic
les, more so, perhaps, than a de
sire to maliciously misrepresent
this section.

A Startling Test
The Cordele Sentinel • says:-
Quite a good deal of interest is
already being taken in tho fair to
be held this fall.. The exact date
and premium list has not yet beeir
agreed upon, But it is proposed to
have quite a good county display
and premim list.
The grounds aro located within,
two hundred yards of the court
house, and are well adopted to the
purpose intended. We congratu
late the promoters and bespeak
'abundant success for them in their
good work.”

It ( .is said that twenty-four
states, that is, their legislatures,
have passed resolutions asking for
a constitutional convention for
th.e- United States. This same
resolution was recently adopted by
tjie Senate of Florida, but when it
came to the governor for his ap
proval,. he promptly vetoed the
measure, and pointed out the great
danger of such action on the part
of the legislature. Gov. Jennings,
in giving his reasons for the Veto,
says that he does not see any ne-
pessity for the revision 6f the
constitution of the United States
and that he does not consider it
best for the poople of Floriduthat
that state should take any such
action.

Three cadets were expelled the
other day from the Georgia Mili
tary College at Millcdgevillo for
refusing to march behind a negro
band. This is tho same spirit
that prompted the young lady at
Indianapolis to,refuse to rngke up
a bed which had lieen occupied by
Booker Wushingtbn. This is all
right in its place; it is perfectly
justifiable when-ft white man is
placed in such contact with a ne
gro as to denote his inferiority to
the negro. No white man wants
to play second fiddle to any negro,
but there aro occasions where
white men make themselves ridicu
lous by kicking up a row over in
significant matters just for the
purposo of making a “ grand
stand ” play and displaying their
race prejudice. When this is tin-
purpose, the actors become rid icji-
lous.

Miss I.ula Spence is a young lady
who was until a few days ago era-,
ployed as a chamber maid in one
of the big hotels in Indianapolis,
Indiana. It happened that Booker
Washington was in Indianapolis on
one of his usual northern tours and
stopped at the hotel , where this
young Indy was employed, remain
ing over uight. The next- morning
Miss Spruce wus told to make up
the bed which Booker had occupied
the night before. Being n Southern
girl, this was more than she could
stnnd for, so she refused point
blank to do so, and the proprietor
of tho hotel promptly discharged
her. The matter got into the
nowpapers, and now Miss Spruce
is delugqd with letters, money and
offers of positions from all over the
South. She has^accepted a position
in Houston, Texlts.

Sims’ sentence is very encourag-,
ing to young"'and ambitious em
bezzlers.—Dublin Times.
Yes, it is “very Encouraging” to
be disgraced for life by serving
term in the 'penitentiary,. to be
forever branded, as a thief and
mistrusted and shunned by all
right thinking people, to say
nothing bf the shame and sorrow
lie has brought on his aged father
and mother. Any youngmnn who
is willing to pay the price and is
so lost to manhood and honesty,
would steal, ho iqatter if Sims had
beeu sentanced twenty years in
stead 'of six. The “pace that
kills”'will still be followed by the
rapid young men who are deluded
by the glure und splendors of
wealth, and who are not . content
to work and save money by the
slow process that makes mone'y
valuble when earned by the sweat
of the brow, as is the decree ofthe

It costs the Royal Baking Pow- ,
