was a very busy session.
Rev. ‘J. D. Norris (lives the Reders
of the News the full Outlies
of the Convention.
Tlie Southern Baptist Convention
met in Savannah May 8th, ll)<is, this
being the forty-eightu session It was
the greatest gathering of this largo and
representative body of Christian work-
era. The States composing tlic conven
tion are ns follows:
I ’ Maryland, Virginin, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Ala
bama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri.
. Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Indian
Territory and the District of Columbia.
.The object of this convention was to
t elicit, combine and direct the energies
of the whole denomination in one sn-
1 cred effort for the propagation of the
S propagation of the gospel.
■ This convention has created three
{boards, namely: The Foreign Mission
2 Board, located nt Kichmond, Va.; The
1 Home Mission Board, located at At-
Y lanta. Ga.; The Sunday-school Board,
I located at Nashville, Tenp.
■ / Dr. K. J. Willingham is secretary of
* the foreign board; Dr. F. C. McConnell
I is secretary|of the home board (both
f of these men are Georgians); Dr. J. $1.
■ Frost is secretary of the Sunday-school
1 board.
2 :The foreign board looks after the
mission work of the convention in
. Mc]0co, Brnzil, Italy, Africa, Chinn
and Japan. The home board looks
After the mission work in the destitute
sections of Texas, Indian Territory,
portions of Missouri, the mountain re
gions of Kentucky, Tennessee, Noi-tji
and South Carolina, Georgiu and Ala

also the work among the factory people
of the cities itnd among the foreign
population of New Orleans, St.
Louis, Baltimore, Kansas City, Mem'
It . phis, Louisville and many other places,
•as. This board does work among t he negroes
™ of the South.
The Suudny-school board prepares
and publishes the Sunday-School liters
' ture of the convention.
There is no such thing as the Baptist
Ohurch South, while there are Baptist
'jtehurches in the South; each church is
complete and independent of any other
; -church, or churches or conventions.
’ -Associations and conventions are crea
tures of the churches, and in order to
carry on the work common to all the
churches and keep up denominational
unity, associations, conventions and
' .boards have been organized. The dele
gates composing the Southern Baptizt
Convention are elected both on a nu
Clerical and financial basis. Whenever
the convention meets at nny citremc
point of the vast territory covered by
the convention there is never a full
delegation ip'attendance. There were
one thousand and fifty-seven delegates
at the Savannah convention.
The convention met in Savannah in
1861—forty-two years ago. Governor
J. P. Eagle, of Arkansas, was elected
president and Judge George Hlllyer, of
Georgia, Hon. E. W. Stephens, of Mis-
.aouri, Dr. A, E, Owen, of Virginia, and
Dr. it. 0. Buckner, of Texas, were
elected vice-president!. Dr.S. L. Bur
rows, of Tennessee, and 0. L. Gregory
were elected secretaries. George W.
Horton, of Kentucky, was elected
treasurer and Dr. W. P. Harvey, or
Kentucky, auditor. Gov. J. M.Terrell
made the address of welcome. Dr. P.
P. Hale, of Kentucky, res; ended to the
address of welcome.
Dr. R. J, WH Ingham read h'a
his report on the work of the Foreign
Mission board. Twenty new foreign
missionaries were sent out by the for
eign board the past convention year.
The Foreign Mis.-Ion board made a good
report—did not owe any debt at all.
There were 1,000 persons baptised by
the foreign missionaries sent out by
this board the past year.
The churches gave $218,012.01 for
'"loreign missions the past year. Several

Dr. J. M. Frost,' secretary of the
Sunday-school board, mode his report.
It was a fine report indeed. The amount
received for literature by the boaidthe
past year was $79,3c8.54. All the money
this board raises above expenses goes
for missions. This board hay bought a
building, in Nashville costing $00,000.00
for the use of pile board. Wo have
beeii renting up to this time. This
board publishes the Sunday-school lit
erature, U-nots, Bibles and books. It
has employed Prof. I,. P. Lenvell; of
Mississippi, ltev. H. M. Inlow, of Mis
souri, and Rev, W. B. Bpiitnan.of South
Carolina, as Sunday-school evangelists.
Dr. F. C. McConnell, secretary of the
home board, made his report. This
board raised $08,950.20 the past .year.
A fine report of the work done among
the Germans in Baltimore, St. Louis
and Galveston. The work done among
the ngroes is not so encouraging.
Much of this state of affairs is due to
the political, social and religious dis
cussions going on in the United States
concerning the negroes during the past
year. The .work in Cuba is very grati
fying indeed.
Dr. L. Burrows, in a speech, stated
that the Baptist Year Book, published
by the American Baptist Publication
Society, was very inaccurate in many
respects this yenr. It is almost impos
sible for the Baptists to secure accurate
statistics, owing to our church polity
and cnrelesness on the part of clerks.
Dr. W, J. Williamson, of St. Louis,
preached the convention zermon.
The various committees were ap
pointed, and later made thtir reports,
which were thoroughly discussed.
The next convention will be held In
Nashville, Tcnn., Dr. W. W. Landrum
to preach the convention sermon. It
was a great meeting indeed.
Among the prominent Baptists who
died during the year were Dr. J. L. M
Curry, Dr. I. T. Tichenor, Dr. George
D. Boardman, Dr. J. M. Stiller, Dr.
David Shaver, Dr. N. B. Randall, Gen.
T. J. Morgan, Dr. A. A. Kendrick, Dr.
G. J. Johnson, Dr. B. M. Cainway.
.There are 00.809 Baptist ministers in
the United States. There are -1,030,402
regular Baptists in the United States.
There are over 5,000,000, counting all
the Baptists, in the United States.
There are nearly 0,000,000 Baptists in
tlie world.
The Baptists have nine theological
seminaries in the United States; 100
colleges and universities: has 105acad
emies and high schools. They have 43
orphan homes; they have 143 Baptist
papers in tho United States, and they
gave over $14,000,000 for the Lord’s
work last year. The Bnptists nr« very
prosperous all over the world. .Their
principles arc growing in fnvor daily.

Bob Burdotte gives this simple
recipe: “ My homeless, friend with
the chromatic nose, while you are
stirring up sugar in a ten-cent
glass of gin, let me give jiou a fact
to wgsh down with it. You may
say you have longed for the free,
independent life of ti farmer, but
you have never been ablo to get
money enough to buy a farm. But
there is where you are mistaken.
For some years you have been
drinking a good improved farm at
the rate of one hundred square
feet at a gtijj>. If you doubt this
statement, figure it out for your
self. An acre of land contains
48,600 square feet. Estimating,
for convenience, the land at $48.50
an acre, you will see that it brings
the land to just ono mill per square
foot. Now, pour down the fiery
dose and imagine yon are swallow
ing a strawberry patch. Call in
five of your friends and have them
help .you gulp down that garden
of 600 square feet. Get on a pro
longed spree and see how long it
trill toko to swallow a pasture-land
sufficient to feed a cow. Put down
that glass of gin; there is dirt in
it—100 square feet of good, rich
dirt, worth $48.58 an acre.”
