'within the last fetv months the
women of the country districts of the
United States have found a new oe-
e tion In the Government service.
I hundreds of them nil over the
try have been appointed rural let-

partment show that the women have
done wonderfully well In their new oc

There Is a good deal of dissatisfac
tion among the artists who decorate
the productions of the Sevres manu
factory of porcelain. It has long been
customary for them to receive a per
centage—sold to he as much as twenty-
five per cent.—on the sale of tliclr re
productions. This percentage has not
usually been allowed on the articles
presented to sovereigns or other emin
ent foreigners. Of late years the num
bers of presents have enormously In
creased. On these things the artists
mako no profit. They nre beginning
to object to their treatment.

I For three years visitors to Washing-

Tact that the statue of Andrew Jack-
son, In Lafayette square, Washington,
Just opposite the White House. Is dis
colored with verdigris, which uot only
streaks tln> marble pedestal, but mot-
lies the charger upon which “Old
Hickory” sits, with his cooked hat up
lifted, as If acknowledging the cheers
of his soldiers. The verdigris comes
from the bronze of the equestrian fig

routhenst corner of the square Is simi
larly discolored, although not to tha
same extent.

Professor K. C. Pickering, of Harvard

Joel Chandler Harris says that “easy
reading is bard writing’’ and Sheridan
gives the antithesis when he says,
“You wrlto with eaae to show your
breeding,
Rut easy writing Is curst bard read
ing.”
I am too sick to write easy, but I
don’t wish to bo curst about It. This
gloomy weather takes away all my hi-
Isrlty. I.riwell says, "Oh, what's so
rare as a day In Juno.” It has rained
every day and every night since the
lit and we don't like It at my house,
for It was my wife’s birthday and we
hoped It would bo bright and balmy,
fer the poor woman don’t get but two
matornal feasts in a year and two pa
ternal kisses. I was sick the night
before and she was up with me half
the night and slept late. I had creep-
ed In to. breakfast and slipped a five-
dollnr gold piece under her plate and
Intended to rise and kiss her unwrln-
klcd brow when she appeared, but she
slipped up behind me and kissed mo
first. She never did It that way be
fore, and tho boys hint that she saw
tho gold shining and It excited her
labial views and osculatory glands
and she couldn't refrnin.
"Gold, gold, gold, gold,
Bright and yellow, hard nnd cold.
Heavy to get nnd light to hold,
Spent by the young, brt hugged by tho
old,
To save, to ruin, or to curse to bless,
Now stamped with the Image of good
Queen Rcsb,
And now of bloody Mary.”
But sho got more than I gave her,
and nobody got a IiIbs but mo. "Chil
dren," said I “this Is your mother's
•eventy-seea-td blrt-day. You know
that the stars fell seventy-two years
ago and that’s tho reason they did
fall. They know that a brighter light
was coming and so they paled their
ineffectual fires and fell to the ground
and expired.
"I am only 71," said my wife. “Why
do you try to make mo 72?” "Be
cause ” said I, “you have had seventy-
two birthdays. You had one the day
you was boru. When you were a
year old you had had two." She then
gave It up.
These birthdays are the mile stones
that measuro the journey of life. Next
Monday I will be 72. On tho 23d one
of the girls will bo 40. On the 24th
my mother was born nnd so was my
little grandchild, Caroline, who was
named for her. My wife can tell the
birthday of every child and grand
child, but I know only unlf a dozen.
Well, the Mexican boy did come and
for a whole week we have feasted on
his presence and listened to the same
old songs he used to sing. He Is a
fine singer nnd has picmy of help
from the children and grandchildren.
