A cable dUpatcb from Soledad, Ven
ezuela, says: Since the last dispatch
was sent at 3 o’clock Monday after
noon th* battle between the revolu
tionary forcos st Ciudad Bolivar and
th* Venesuolan government army,
commanded by General Gomez, has
raged madly. Block after block was
disputed, the government troops en
tering tbe city slowly. All the houses
had been barricaded and tbe revolu
tionists had been forced from flat
roofs called azotoas. When the revo
lutionists finally abandoned tho bous
es, after having, taken all that could
be used - for barricades or to other
wise *top the advance of tbe govern
ment troops they were Immediately
occupied by the government soldiers
who bored holes In them so as to
communicate with the next house.
The city appoars to have been struck
by a cyclone.
At 7 o'clock In tho evening the gov
ernment forces which were advancing
from all directions arrived near tho
center of Ciudad Bolivar. For two
hours previously firing bad diminish
ed; but It was renewed with more
vigor at 10 o'clock at night and illumi
nated the sky.
At S o'clock In the morning when
the Inhabitants of tho commercial and
foreign parts of the jClty near the Ala
meda saw tho advanco of tbe govern,
ment troops they all abandoned their
homes and sought refuge In other
parts of tho city, crossing the streets
amidst a hall of bullets and shells, the
women carrying their children, the
strong helping the weak; many men
In trying to protect tho women, fall
ing, struck by bullets.
In the middle of the streets what
with the firing, the yells of the wound
ed and the crying of tho women and
children a terrible scene was witness
ed bad enough to disgust anybody
forever with civil war.
The government troops, howover,
acted with humanity, especially tbe
forcos of General Rivas, who fighting
bravely, was tho first to order the at
tacking force to be merciful.
At 8 o'clock Tuesday morning tho
government generals having effected
a junction of their forces, north and
south and having received further
supplies of ammunition, decided ,o
push the attack on the renter of tho
city. At 10 o'clock the government
troops had captured the north side of
the Alameda, the public park of Ciu
dad Bolivar, which has boon defended
by a double row of barricades. Be
hind one of these wero found more
than thirty dead soldiers lying on top
of each other, while wounded men
were seen on all sides. At 10 o'clock
tho government commanders, seolng
that only the artillery could make a
breach In tho barricades of tbe Ala
meda, ordered twelve guns to open
fire on them and at the same time the
Venexuelan fleet which had changed
Its anchorage so as to bring Its guns
to boar effectively on the city, opened
tiro.
Tbe soldiers on both sides had no
food for two days. No ambulances
were used and yet the fighting con
tinued.
The old customs house and water
works havo been taken. The Dnltoa
block, the property of tho United
States consul, where all tho loading
German and French families roslilo,
was attacked. Tho jail was tho ecu-
tor of-a tcrrtblo resistance. All the
defeated revolutionists concentrated
there. It Is estimated that more than
200 men have been killed In that vi
cinity.
A messenger who arrived in Cara
cas by steamer and train from Ciudad
Bolivar reports that the city was cap
tured by the government troopa at 8
o’clock Tuesday morning.

According to The London Chronicle
the action of America In annexing the
Islands off Borneo raises an exceed
ingly delicate situation and the Brit
ish foreign olfico has asked Washing
ton for an explanation.
The Islands concerned, says tho pa
per, are a gioup of seven which origi
nally belonged to the sultan of Sulu,
from whom they passed by a charter
In 1881 to tho control of tho British
North Borneo Company, whoso offl-
cors confirm that they are undoubted
ly British torrltory.
The American sldo of the question,
as given by tho United States embas
sy, says The Chronicle, Is that the is
lands are undoubtedly American by
rlgbt of conquest, having belonged to
the Philippines and the sultan of Sulu
having confirmed and acknowledged
American supremacy over them.
Tho Islands had never been occu
pied by any European nation, and it
la unknown whether Spain evor recog
nized the trading treaty wblch exist,
ed between tbe Borneo companies and
tbo inhabltanta of the Islands.
