called Berrien. For the first
forty years of ; her history Vienna
i was only a wide place in the road
where the jail and court house
were located. Ten years later a
few county officials, a school
teacher, a doctor and a few law
yers located in Vienna. A coun
try store or two, a saloon, a black
smith and woodshop constituted
the chief business of the place.
' Sixteen years ago Vienna had
railroad lines surveyed , by her
that about half awakened her tq
the importance of building up a
town. There was a steady but
substantial growth until two
years ago when Vienna began to
grow rapidly. One year hgo Vi

career of prosperity and progress.

extending from Union street to

the railroad facilities necessary.
The large and convenient depot of
the Georgia Southern is just op

enjoys the very best to be had.
The large two-story gin house
is located in the south-west cor

office building. In this building
is the office of Mr. Edwin Howell,
the popular general manager. The
office of Mr. 0. S. Buzemore, the
efficent book-keeper, .telegraph

Jno. U. McDoxald, . Secretary.
A picture of it can be seen on this
page. No one need think there
will be no room to store his seed
at the oil mil for there is ample
room. This building is well ven
tilated and convenient to load
and unload seed from cars or
wagons. .
Just north of this is the large
brick structure built in compart
ments. Tho oil mill is in this
handsome building. The ma
chinery used in this plant is all
new and .of the best quality and
much of it was made to order for
this mill. The engine used 'is a
125-horse power. There is noth
ing shoddy in the building or the
machinery. The best operators
and skilled labor are employed to
operato this plant. The charac
ter and quality of the goods pro
duced by this mill is the very best
in the United States.
Tho oil mill began operations
January 1st, 1008 and with this
late start the mill ran night and
day until May.
It is owned by a stock company
and started with $40,000 paid up
capital. The building cost $20,-
000, the machinery $20,000 and
$10,000 was invested in the gin
nery, with a daily capacity of
crushed seed of 40 tons, and a
daily output of 14 tons of meal.
Number of hands employed 47;
Monthly-pay-roll, $1,800.
Just north of the large brick
structure are five oil tanks that
hold 8,000 gallons each. There
wljl be five more ' put in soon
which will give a capacity of 80,-
000 gallons of oil*
ust east of these tanks are sev
eral hundred cords of wood to run
mill with.
ost of the brick structure is
thfl large hull house 60x120 feet.

East of this building are stables
fot the use of the company - and
ttidir customers who desire to use
them. |
pn the south-east boundary of
of the land occupied by the plant
are four nice cottages erected for
tenants and employes. AH of
these buildings are well painted
arid a high board fence encircles
the entire plant.
This is a chartered institution.
On tho first of February last the
capital stock of the company wi&
increased to 55,000, all "of whicli
was promptly taken up by tho
originul stockholders. The com
pany will soon put in a fertilizer
mixing plant and other equip
ments. They exchange meals and
hulls for seed, or buy outright.
The farmers have given the mill
a fine patronage the past .season,
and ns the company is better pre
pared to servo the public this sea
son than last, no doubt the mill
will have a more liberal patron
age than last.
The personnell of the company
is: Mr. Thomas Egleston, presi
dent, Mr. J. T. Orme, treasurer,
Atlanta; Mr. Ed. Howell, man
ager, John B. McDonald, secre
tary, Vienna. The directors are:
Thomas Egleston, John Gold
smith, Atlanta.; Ed. Howell, J.
B. McDonald and A. E. Jordan,
Vienna.
Tho officers are composed of
men of high moral character who
are among the very best business
men in the state, their names be
ing synonymous with just and
honest dealing.
Tho city has oxempted this
plant from taxation for city pur
poses for five years. This plant
has greatly enhanced values of all
kinds of property in the city.
There have moved into our. city
several enterprising and noble
oitizens, and it is a great benefit
to the farmers of this section. It
gives them a high price for their
raw seed as well as a permament
market, and furnishes the oil,
meal and hulls fresh and much
cheaper than the goods 'could be
shipped from other places. It
gives employment to a large force
of skjlled labor, and puts in cir
culation each month over 1,800,
and gives freight to the railroad
both ways.
The establishment of this plant
has‘aroused and awakened our
people to a more progressive spir
it; it shows tHat a little energy,
push and organization and united
and persistent effort will secure
and establish enterprises of like
character. The proprietors of
this plant are turning out the
highest and best grade of goods,
and have gone into the open
market with' them, feeling confi
dent that brains, energy and cap
ital could accomplish as much in
Vienna as thoy could elsewhere,,
and the success which is crown
ing thqir etforts shows that they
reckoned wisely. It is hard to
estimate just how much the Vien
na cotton oil mill is worth to the
community. Besides the local
value its products go out into oth
er cities, adding to our business
prestige and the reputation of our
city for making first-class goods
in all lines. It has already made
a reputation for courtesy, fair
and honest dealing ‘ and prompt
ness in filling orders, and it is
bound to hold a place second to
none in Georgia.
Mr. John B. McDonald -first
conceived tho plan. of organizing
an oil mill in Vienna and succeed
ed in getting some of his Atlanta
friends interested in it, and suc
cess was assured from the start.
Mr. A. E. Jordan rendered much
valuable assistance, and has
It has benefltted Dooly county
by advertising the county as a
manufacturing county, by putting
$55,000 worth of property in* her
bounds to be taxed for county
purposes. It has benefltted the
state of Georgia by adding an
other strong add well organized
oil mill to the already long list of
oil mills in the state, and it" }um
some capital brought from other
states to be taxed for state pur
poses. It benefits the citizens ii\
the county of Dooly by giving
them a good market for their
seed and creates keen . competi
tion for the purchase of seed, for
before the oil mill came only one
price was paid for seed, but now
seed can be bought all the year
around in Vienna from a peck to
a ton. Cotton seed meal, hulls
and oil are for sale all the year
around and the merchants in Vi
enna and Dooly county have an
honest and fair competitor who
deals in these goods. All tbue 'ia
a convenience and a real benefit
to the farmers of Dooly county.
