'According to announcement
made last week the case of the
State vs J ae Qunttlebaum, for the
murder of Walter Brannon at Una-
dilla, week befote last, was called.
The defendant’s counsel made a
motion for a continuance upon
the grounds that the condition of
the prisoner was such that he was
not able mentally to stand the
trial. ■ He is subject to epileptic
fits and has had several since the
killing, and it is said that he had
a severe one in jail Monday after
noon. Expert testimony was put
upon the stand to prove the con
dition of the prisoner’s mind in
the person of Dr. Horine, a spe
cialist of Americns, who figured
so prom inently ns a witness in the
Hinkle murder cases there several
years ago. His testimony was
in favor of the defendant. Judge
Littlejohn refused to grant a con
tinuance for the term, but passed
it over until yesterday afternoon.
The defendant is ably .repre
sented by Cols. J. E. Sheppard of
Americus; Crum & Jones of Cor-
dele and J. T. Jeter of Unadilla,
The Solicitor will be assisted in

words Rev. Jones used in his ser
mon Sunday night in reference to
a certain Cartersville official sell
ing wine. He said in part:
I am tired of it, and the thing
has got to be stopped. A man in
official position in this town that
will manufacture and sell this
damnable dope must get out of
the dope business or get out of
official position.” He said futher:
I had* rather that President
Roosevelt would come the Indiano-
la, Miss., on us and give us a
decent, sober negro postmaster
than a white man dishing out dope
in the shapeof home-made wine.”
Mr. Akerman and Mr. Jones
met on the street and after pass
ing a few words, Mr. Akerman hit
Mr. Jones in the mouth. Mr.
Jones returned the lick on Aker-
man's eye. Friends interfered
and separated them. Mr. Aker
man accused Mr. Jones of calling
him u dirty dog. Mr. Jones says
his words were : y “Will we good
people of Cartersville let these
dirty dogs sell their wine from
year to year and ruin our children?

Everything is in very good shape
around Jerry. Cotton is being
rapidly picked and market at a
fair price, thus making the finan
cial condition of our farmers very
much better.
Business has greatly revived
and great things are expected in
the future.
We appreciate the kindness of
the News editor in giving us the
twice-a-week papor instead of the
once a week, thus giving us the
news fresh, but we would be pleas
ed to have the News give us the
Vienna cotton quotations in each
issue, which would be of much
interest to our people during the
cotton season, as we are some dis
tance from the market and don’t
know the price until we go into
town.
We have not heard any thing in

D. HURRAY HAY
LOSE HIS EYE-SIGHT.
Mr. W. D. Murray, a promi*
nent farmer of the Shiloh neigh*
borhood, happened to a most
painful and serious accident last
Sunday morning at his home.
He was cutting some wood when
a piece flew up and struck him in
one of his eyes. The lick was a
severe one and the ball of the
eye was injured to such an extent
that it is almost certain that he -
will never see out of it any more,
Mr. Murray came at once to the
city and had Dr. F. E. Williams
to examine and treat it. Mr,
Murray has not been able to see
out of it since the accident and
Dr. Williams thinks that he will
be totally blind in that eye. The.
many friends of Mr. Murray will
be sorry to learn of his great mis*
fortune.

Mr D P Daugnterjr, well known

VV. Va., most likely owes his lile the
kidness of a neighbor, lie was almost
hopelessly afflicted with diarrhoea; was
attended by two physicians who gave him
little, il any, relief, when a neighbor
learning of his serious condition, brought
him a bottle of Chamberlain’s Colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, which
cured him in less than 14 hours. For
sale by all druggists.
A Correction.
I has been reported that I was
going to sell my farm place and.
store business at Jerry and movp
to town. I wish to say that this
report is without authority and I
take tli is means of correcting the
same. I feel that this was due
to a misunderstanding. I was
only talking of closing out my
mercantile business and doing
business in town, but I now wish
to say to my friends and custom*
ers that I have decided to con*
tinue the business here and will
carry a full line of groceries and
drygoods. A. J. Sanders,

A correspondent in the Macon
Telegraph had something to say in
Saturday's paper about the exten*
sion of tlie Wrightsvillo & Tennillo
railroad from Hawkinsville to
some point in Dooly county in the
near future, or rather it was the
belief of some of the people of
that place that such a move was
on foot. The article in the Tele*
gruph stated that a meeting of the
stockolilers would bo held on the
first Wednesday in October to oon*
sidor increasing the capital stools.
The road is said to have about
$1< < ),C Din the treasury at present.
We beliovo that the extension will
bo. made at somo future date and
that Vionnu, tho capital oity of
Dooly, is the place for it to come
where it can make conneotiona
