A WORTHY INSTITUTION.
\ Our renders will remember nn
article in Saturday’s issue of the
sKews in regard to the Blasingnme
Industrial School, tnkenfrom the
{Thomnsvillo Timcs-Enterprise.
i This school will fill one of tho
greatest needs of any in the stato.
At it is well known, thoro aro
schools throughout the Southern
atates into which all destitute or
phans, under ten years of age can
enter and find warm hearts to re
ceive thorn. There are also homes
for girls and women who have
been living lives of degradation
and shame. But this school and
home is for tho training and load
ing into paths of rectitudo girls
betweon the ages of ten and
eighteon which will keep them
from going ostray. Tho home is
situat ed nearThomasville and was
Openod to girls October 1st. •
The homo for the present will
be under the supervision of the
Ladies Home Mission Socioty of
the ThomasvilloMethodist church.
The News truts that this school
Will be successful and receive the
hearty support of everybody in
■ympathy with such a great cause
Anyono can get full information

THE ROAD LAW.
According to information fur
nished us by several prominent
lawyers the Alternative Road Law
which was victorious, according
to the interpretation of the law
by the Attorney General, will he
on the people of Dooly for the
next three years before a vote can
be had pn the question again.
They have thoroughly investigated
the law and have decided that
there is no provision for an appeal.
According to the position taken
by the News, we were not in favor
of the clause in the recent law
passed by the legislature, requir
ing a majority vote of tho qualified
electors of the county.
The Nows U always willing to
leave any election to the majority
of the votes cast. In fact, the
election of every officer from the
justico of tho peace to tho presi
dent by the vote of the peoplo has
been our hobby, in other words
we are willing for a majority to
rule on any subject, and nlso to
he governed thereby.
As an editor, wo have the same
right to vote nml express our opin
ion as any individual. Wo are
always democratic enough to abide
by tho choice of a majority of the
people on any question, whether
it moet our own personal approval
or not.
That is our position in the mat
ter, just as it was stated in these
columns sevoral months ogo.

The Deceased Wife'e Niece.
In Australia a man can marry his
deceased wife’s sister, hut the court*
have decided that he cannot marry
his deceased wife’s niece. The law
which made the former marriage
legal had omitted all mention of the
latter. The anomaly is probably
the result of an oversight

Man Came From Germany and Volun-
. tartly Surrendered.
New York, Oct. (.—Coming volun
tarily from Nuremburg, Germany, to
surrender end answer to a charge
made by the government of entering
a fraudulent Invoice, Paul Retneraann
baa been arraigned before United.
States Commissioner Shields and en
tered a plea of not guilty. He fur
nished cash ball In the sum of $2,600.
According to the complaint, Retne
mann, who Is engaged in the export
hop business and had a New York of
fice, shipped a quantity of hops to
Carl Neldhart, at Chattanooga, Tenn.,
valued at $6,000. In one of the bales
of hops, the complaint says, the export
er placed two dozen toy trick watches
veined at $2 each, which were not on
tbe invoce. Tho presence of these
watches In the hops was In some un
known manner discovered by the gov
ernment agents, who permitted them
to remain that they might arrest Neld-
hardt after he had taken them out
The latter pleaded guilty to the
charge after Indictment by the federal
courts of Tennessee. The motive for
sending the so-called trick watches In
tbe hops was not, it Is stated, to es
cape paying the duty, but to get them
into this country.
