MTCHATKA COAST
ISO MASSACRED BY PIRATES
ON THE KAR
Russian HasWritten His Brother
in San Francisco Telling
of Awful Affair.
San Francisco June 18.—Details
of a terrible massacre' by pirates
of 150 natives on the Tyberian
coast lias been received in a letter
from Petropavlovski, on tbe coast
of Kuintchatka.
A. Morogravlenof has written
to his brother, a resident etf San
Francisco, that in the barly part
of the year the natives in one, of
the small settlements down the
coast observed a yacht, or schoon
er, drop anchor in the harbor, and
its coming was hailed witfi cries
of rejoioing. Off the vessel came
a number of small boats. The
natives could see the crew piling
what they thought were supplies
into the smaller craft. Then tbe
men pulled for the shore.
During that aud the next day
there was heard the firing «f arms
and, later, smoke and fiA were ob
served. This led to an investiga
tion from Petropavloski and other
towns on the coast, and a horrible
tale of pillage and uiaseacre was
brought to light.
About the streets of tbe -settle
ment, writes Morogravlenof, were
strewn tbe bodies of 160 of thy
inhabitants, shot and cut to piecA
by the pirates, who, under the
pretence of friendship, hndgained
a landing on the coast. Robbery
was their motive, for every hut
had been ransacked, and anything
of marketable value had been
taken.
Who the marauders were, those
who managed to make their escape
could not say, beyond giving the
information that some Japanese
were in the party.
When Morogravlenof sent his
letter the people of Petropavlovski
feared au attack on that town.

Young men who aro fond of
baseball might learn a valuable
lesson frqm the Macon team, if
they would. There are a great
many yonug men who, as the timo
for knocking off work approaches,
become listless aud more or less
careless. They watch the clock
for tho time to quit, aud as soon
us tho hand marks the time on the
dial, they are out and off like a
hot shot out of a shovel. What
may for convenience be called the
last inning of their day’s work is
carelessly performed, to the dis
advantage of the employer. Prob
ably one of the secrets of Manager
Smith's success is that he requires
bis men to work, and work hard,
iright up to the very last ball over
■the plate. So long ns there is. a
lighting chance, Smith’s men
tight for it; aud that very spirit
of doing the best possible work
right up to the limit hns won
many a game of baseball for tbe
Macon team.—Savannah News.
