IN THEIR DRAMA OF THIS LIFE
Joel Covington and Wife Looked On
at their Ante-Hortem Obsequies -
Aged Pair Had Prepared Their
Own Resting Place. .
Columbia, S. C., May 6.—The mon
ument at the empty graves of Mr. and
Mrs. Joel Covington were unveiled in
the beautiful Hebrom cemetery near
liennettsville, Marlboro county,
today in the presence of a very large
gathering.
The aged couple were present to
participate in tire exercise, and hear
riilogiesof themselves. J. P. Gibson,
member of the house of representa
tives, was orator of the day. Capt.
Prank Manning presided, and made
:m appropriate speech, and a beauti
ful essay was read by Miss Cameron
»f Virginia, who is teaching school in
that, section.
Some time ago Covington had the
graves for himself and wife prepared
and tombs erected bearing the follow
ing inscription: -‘Joel Covington.
Dec. 21, 1880, and Charity Ann Cov
ington, Aug. 80, 1888.” Covington
has contracted with the marble
works to inscribe the dates of their
deaths. He says lie wants to put his
relatives to as little trouble as possi
ble after his death. He has two sons,
Thomas C., and Julius, and both are
prosperous and usefulcltixens. Julius
was mayor of McCnll for several
years.
“Uncle Joel” Is a whole-souled,
jolly old man and enjoys telling and
hearing a Joke. His familiar laugh is
to be heard in an; group where he
happens to be. He sometimes goes
and lies down In his tomb and laughs
about it not being as comfortable as
lie would like. During Mr. Gibson’s
speech today the jolly old man,
usually so full of mirth, bowed his
white head over Ids open gruve and
in vain tried to conceal Ids tears and
sobs, and there was not a dry eye in
die gathering.
After the exercises' "Uncle Joel"
entertained a number of his friends
at dinner. ,

Valdosta, On., May 6.—Religious
services tills morning were held in
the county Jail for the benefit of J. U.
Rawlings and his sons, the services
being conducted by Rev. M. A. Mor
gan, of the Methodist church. Many
ladies and gentlemen attended the
meeting and the condemned men
listened with apparent Interest to tile
rending of the Scriptures, and the
prayers.
It was the lirst regular service that
had been conducted In the jail,
though the men have been visited by
many ministers and spiritual advis
ers, ’ Rawlings admits that he bears
too much malice in Ills heart to think
of being saved, but lie says those who
helped to convict Ids boys are as sure
of hell as he Is.
One or the olllcers, who had much
to do with the prosecution received a
long lettor from old man Rawlings
today. The writer started out by-
saying that he expected to go to hull
and he expected to meet all of those
who had helped to convict Ills boys.
“In hell, I expect to tell you why I
got out of the carriage at the bridge
und walked home,” he wrote, "and
when you and I have spent ten
thousand years in hell, I expect to
point the linger of scorn at you and
holler. ‘Hurrah for the majesty of
the law and the punishment of the
wicked.’ ”
Rawlings then went on to tell pf the
sorrow that had been brought upon
his wife and daughters and of liow
“you like me, have w aited too late to
repent,
He said lie was not writing to
change anything that had been done,
but to put the people on notice that

Cordele, Ga., May 7.—It has been
currently reported on the streets of
this place and among the local rail
road men that the Albany, Florida
and Northern railroad bos been pur
chased by tlie Georgia Southern and
Florida railway. It is known that a
few days since Vice President and
General Manager Parrott and Gen
eral Superintendent Grady, of the
Georgia Southern and Florida, came
Cordele and were met here by
Manager Crews, and together in a
special they took a trip over the line
from Cordele to Albany.
It has been surmised tliat the Sea
board Air Line would want tills
property, and on one or two occasions
rumor luvd i( tliat they bobglit it. It
will mean much for Cordele if the
Georgia Southern and Florida has
taken over this short line, as it will
be at once brought up to a high stand
ard In every respect and operated
probably in connection with other
lines southwest of Cordele and Al
bany.
Regarding any changes in the man
agement of tlie property, nothing be
learned. The same report has It tliat
they also purchased the Georgia
Northern, a line running from A1
bany to Pldcock, and the two will be
operated in connection with tlie main
system of the Georgia Southern and
Florida.
