MR. DARSEY WRITES A
CARD TO THE NEWS.
Does Not Think the Committee Did
Right and Asks “Wat" Some
Pertinent Questions.
Editor Vienna News:
As you seem to hare opened up the
columns of your paper 10 the use ol
one who styles himself to
abuse and slander one Hoke Smith,
I will a.k you for space sufficient to
address to him a few pertinent ques
tions, and if you should refuse, I
guess perhaps if the charges are not
excessive I might pay for the space.
I do this in the name of fairness and
because I believe there are other
readers of your paper who do not
endorse and approve of what he says.
In last weeks Issue he says, “The
Committee Did Bight.'.' Did right in
what? In making the restrictions
governing those who should vote In
the coming primary? If they did
right this year, Wat, when there was
no prospect of opposition to the dem
ocratlo nominees, then they must
have done wrong in 1900, 190!, 1904,
when there was prospect of opposition
and when no such' arbitrary rules
were adopted, don’t you think?
Will you please explain to the peo
ple why there was made such a Her
culean effort to debar the populists
from participating in the primary
this year when the majority of them
have helped to nominate your county
officers? I expect if the truth was
known some of these very “detesta
ble” pops voted for the editor in the
county primary and if they are good
enough to allow a voice In the county
affairs are they not good enough to be
risked in a gubernatorial primary,
(specially when vital issues are
raised?
When a man votes in a primary,
doesn’t he impliedly say hewlll abide
the majority and support the nomi
nees? If that is true do you mean tq
say with the executive committee!
that you have no confidence in any
man who voted the populist ticket?
I will say in passing that I have
never voted the populist ticket in my
life and I have no khtdred that I can
remember now who overdid, but this
brasen etfiontery on the part of the
executive committee was directed at
them not because they were populist,
but because the majority of them
were known to be supporters of
Hoke; and still it was right was it,
Wat?
Take off those Howell glasses and
you oan see some things.
You don't believe in disfranchising
the negro. Neither do Howell, Estill,
Russell and Nunnally, yet you and
they say, the executive committee
did right when they attempted td
disfranchise thousands of good hoiv
orablo and upright white men do you
Wat?
I remymber to have, read of
Prodigal once who left Ills fathers
house and went over to the euerny,
yet when he returned they killed the
fatted calf ami made merry. Do you
think his father did right. Wat?
According to your theory he ought
to huve met him at the gate and told
him “I have no confidence in your
pretentions, you must subscribe to
certain declarations before I'll take
you back, you must say first that you
expect to nlllgn yourself with the
organized family, and support all of
Its institutions, etc., from this time
on, now, henceforth and forever re
gardless of consequences.”
Can’t you see Wat, that that is a
direct blow at their honesty and In
tegrity? Can’t you see Wat, that
that is an effort to destroy men’s in
dividuality and make them appear
like knots on sticks? Suppose the
national democratic party should
nominate Grover Cleveland for pres
ident next year, would you support
him? Suppose they should nominate
southern men and should nominate
Bally of Texas and Watson of Geor
gia, would you support him, Wat? If
they should nominate “Old Nick,”
would you support him, Wat?
Can’t yon see the Injustice, the
impropriety of it?
Now a few words as to your article
til is week, “The Kaco for Governor."
II Is hard to tell from a perusal of
your labored article just who you are
for governor, but this much is sure,
you are against Hoke. I shan't fall
out with you for that, for this is a
free country. I am for him.
You say In your article that be bus
proceeded to cues out everybody and
everything whodldn’tget on bis band
wagon. Now I desire to say plainly
that you have let your Howell zeal
run away with your judgement.
Hoke Smith don’t cuss. They would
turn him out of the Presbyterian
church quick if you could establish
your charge. I am sure I could get
» certificate from the pastor of the
North Avenue Presbyterian church
t lint he does not curse. You ought to
iw inure careful about what you say.
Way? Now, I think you will admit,
i hat yon misstated the matter, but
you meant to say of course that be
ubused everybody and everything.

There’s where you ate mistaken
again, Wat. •
In catling attention to the fact that
Albert Howoli, Clark’s brother, is
paid 15,000 a year to look after insur
ance legislation is abusing Albert,
why'you are right. Wat. If culling
attention to the fact that Hatnp Mc
Whorter who is paid a handsome
salary by the Southern railroad to
hang around the capltol during the
meetings of the legislature and never
appear in a court house to defend
them there, is abusing McWhorter,
why then you are right, Wat. If
calling attention to the fact that
Gov. Terrell knowing these tiifhgs,
offered Hump McWhorter a place on
the supreme bench, is abusing Ter
rell, tlion yon are right Wat.
Can’t you tell the difference be
tween abuse ami fair and just criti
cism?
Has the day arrived in Georgia
when a man can’t call attention to
theso gross wrongs without every
little two-by-four politician hollows
clap-trap, abuse, etc.
You seem to have at the Journal
too, Wat. Is that because It can’t be
intimidated and frightened into sub
mission?
Again you say Hoke Smith says
Estill, Bussell and Nunnally were
runnihg in the interest of Clark
Howell. Here’s what ho said, Wat.
He said that a vote for either of these
men meant a vote fur Clark. Can't
you understand that proposition?
One word as to who you are. You
say you are Wat, chhairtnati of the
self-constituted democratic club of
Dooly county. Pardon me, but a
stranger would tlduk you chief spon
