Hon. E. B. Lewis.
If public opinion counts for any
thing, and we aro inclined to think it
does, sentiment seems to be tending
toward Mr. E. B. Lewis, who is a
candidate for re-election to congress
from the third district. Home four
or five weeks ago several other aspi
rants entered the race but since that
time one has retired and now Mr.
Lewis’ only opponent, Mr. Hughes,
lias practically" ceased to wage a
campaign.
One thing noticeable Is the fact
that tlie tide is setting toward Mr.
Lewis and a canvass of the situation
shows opinion is crystallizing more
and jiiore daily toward him. The
people over tlie entire district are
manifesting no especial Interest hr
the claims of the opposition, a sign
which proves tlie voters are content
to let well enough ulone.
If Mr. Lewis rose from tlie ranks
of tlie people mid Inis been able to
lend a helping hand to more than
one applicant fur aid, it should not
he held against him. The fact that
he is just a plain businessman and is
shrewd enough to lead in tlie com
mercial world should be of sufficient
import to prove lie conducts affairs
to prove he conducts utfairB at
Washington in tlie same energetic
business way.
Mr. Lewis holds a fine record in
the house and lias more influence by
reason of his long service than can
bo gained by any new member, des
pite his prominence at home. He is
a man of tlie people and therefore
always working for their interests.
Is it right to throw him over just he
cause a few dissatisfied factions feel
it is their tiirntogetapolitical plum?
Dissention never pays. Let tlie peo
ple keep fuitli with a man who lins
been loyal to tboni. and keep Mr.
Lewis ut Washington where lie be
longs.- Americas Press.
He Oot His Ride.
A husky 200-pound man of the hobo
type worked a new game upon a
Southern Pacific passenger conductor
the other night, says the Houston
Post. The man boarded the train at
San Antonio, and took his seat in the
forward smoker, and apparently sank
into a deep slumber. His snores re
sounded through tlie car. At inter
vals throughout tlie all-night ride to
Houston the conductor, aided by the
trainmen, tried to arouse him, so ns
to get his ticket. They pounded him,
pulled his ears, his nose, and jabbed
him all over the body witli their fists.
He slept through it all, or at least he
appeared to be asleep.
Just as the train was pulling into
the yards at Houston he cut short a
snore, roused himself, opened his
eyes and sat up in his seat. The
conductor was entering the coach,
and saw that his troublesome passen
ger was awake at last. Without a
word the conductor touched him
upon tlie arm and called for his tick
et. Tlie man felt through his pock
ets with a sleepy air.
“I’ll declare, I forgot to buy a
ticket,” lie announced.
“If you have no ticket you can pay
me tlie fare; it Is $0.80,” the conduc
tor said. >
The man looked up at tile conduc
tor and a smile spread over his face.
“Say, you had a lot of fun with me
lost night; don’t you think it was
wortli fd.BO to you?” he asked.
Struck with the humor of it, the
conductor returned the smile of the
man, and said, “you earned the ride."
Tlie conductor passed on, and the
passenger alighted at the depot at
Houston. He carried no baggage.
| He was lieard to remark to a fellow
{hobo later in the day that being
punched around by a conductor felt
better than “riding the rods.”
