DAIRY FARMERS TO
ATTEND BIG SHOW
Washington, D. C., Sept—Ar
rangements 'have been ma'de by the
Southern railway to run a special
train carrying dairy farmers 'and
others interested in the building up of
the dairy interests in the south to the
national dairy show to be held Octo
ber 12-21 at Springfield, Mass., at
which the Southern will have an ex
tensive exhibit giving in full presen
tation of the south as a dairy section
at the present time and as a region
for the future development of the
dairy industry.
The idea of the special train from
the south to the dairy show, which is
held in the east for the first time this
year, is to give Southern dairy farm
ers an opportunity to see how the in
dustry is conducted in the north and
to widen their outlook by bringing
them in contact with successful dairy
farmers anddairy workers from all
parts of the country, while a general
attendance at the dairy show on the
part of southern dairymen la expected
to do a great deal to educate the peo
ple of the north as to the advantage*
of the south for the' industry.
Pullman cars will be started from
central point* in each state and will be
made into a solid train into New York
and to Springfield. .The special will
■tart probably on Thursday, October
12, reaching New York on Saturday,
October 14. Already nearly a hun
dred dairy farmers located from Vir
ginia to Hisaisdppi have indicated
their intention to become members
of the party. New England people
have contributed $660,000 for the
’erection of buildings at th* show and
more than 1,000. pure-blood dairy
cattle of the variooa breeds will be on
exhibit, besides a comprehensive col
lection of the most approved imple
ments and machinery used in connec
tion with the dairy indostry.
In connection with the trip, ar
rangements are being made for the
stop-over and side trips to allow
southern dairymen who go to visit
the most interesting milk-producing
centers of the east, including the pas
teurising and distributing plants at
New York, the railroad warehouses
in Jersey City where over 2,000,000
quarts of milk are shipped daily to
New York by special milk trains, the
Mixter farm, an hour’s ride from
Springfield, famous for the breeding
of pure-bred Guernsey cattle, and
Washington, where the party will visit
the Uunited States department of ag
riculture and the bureau of animal in
dustry.
RAPID PROGRESS
THE BOLL WEEVIL
Atlanta, Ga. Sept—“There isn’t
any telling at this time how far the
boll weevil is going,” said State En
tomologist Lee Worsham today. “Its
progress this time is even more rapid
than it was last year, and it looks
like the pest is getting all over the
state.
“It has been found in more counties
but I’d rather not attempt to specify
the territory infested now, until our
men can get ont again in the next
day or two and recheck it. I expect to
prepare a statement in a few days
showing exactly the present situation,
and I fear it is
ed.”
Mr. Worsham
ditions in the
through the next
be more exacting than
but it is his opinion that
iencea to be gained the
the changed conditions,
efits derived from
meet the weevil on its
ing to make
much easier than they
of the other territory attacked
