RAILROADS SHOULD PERMIT
FREIGHTS TO RUM ON SUNDAY »g-
Operation cf Freight* on Sunday In ffj
' Time of War Nece**ary ! Kf,
> Atlanta, Ga., July.—The present'
lav/ which prohibits the running on
Si)mlay of any freight train reduces
the efficiency of the train service in
the State of Georgia 14 per cent. An
average of '4,526 loaded cars move
daily between terminals in Georgia.
If the present law could be suspend
ed during the period of the war, just
that man additional cars would be
available each week for Georgia ship- (
pers. Add 4,520 cars each week to.
the number now available for the
handling of perishnbles and other
freight, and the present freight car
shortage would be very greatly re
lieved. !
That is the “meat in the cocoanut" j
as prominent railroad officails ex-!
pressed it a few days ago in appeal- j
ing to the common sense of the Leg
islature and the people of Georgia in
.support of a bill which will be pre
sented to the present Legislature to J
suspend the law as provided in sec
tions 414 and 416 of the Penal Code
in the State of Georgia for prevent
ing the running of freight train* on
the Sabbatfe day: Also to suspend
section 416 of the existing Penal
Code of Georgia, and penalties impos-
ed thereunder, in so far as the same
may be applicable to the prevention
of any railroad work incident to the
operation of freight trains on the
Sabbath Day.
Discussing the subject editorially,
the Savannah Morning News
May 23, 1917, makes the following
comment under the heading;»' J'The
Ox in the Ditch
/ “Georgia luw provides tha

has been suggested that m" this time
of war, when demands upon the rail-
roftds will be very great and it is im
portant that they perform capacity
service to the country, the prohibi
tions against Sunday service bo with
drawn. The Legislature must decide
whether this will be done, but as j ,
■oldiers and sailors fight on Sunday |
and as the eurmy will not stop the j
operation of his freight trains ori the
Sabbath, it appears that a situation
like that when the ox was “in the
obtains, and nq greater reason J.
Is found why the Legislature should
ir t meet the ruggestioos/ j fejKI
“Simple ar ihmetic would indicate yfew
that if no freight trains move on
Sunday, the freight service of the,
tallroads will be close to 14 per cent puTfl

“Certainly it would he folly, when
the nation is fighting for humanity 11
for the rights of free men, to handi-l[
cap it by refusing to move freight,
trains on Sunday. The soldiers and
sailors would have to be fighting on
that day, consuming enormous sup
plies of food, wearing out clothes and'
shoes, and using up great piles of
shells which would have to he hand- (
led nt some time by American freight
trains." |
