WHEAT PLANTING
TIME IS NEAR
FARMERS SHOULD PLANT ALL
THE WHEAT HE* CAN TAKE
CARE OF.
Atlanta, Ga., Oct.—Wheat plant
ing time is near at hand, and all farm
ers who have not already done
should prepare their ground for sow
ing at once, says the State Depart
ment of Agriculture.
“There is no more Important thing
any Georgia farmer can do right now
than to get ready to plant all the
wheat he can take care of," states
Commissioner J. J. Brown. "Georgia
needs wheat as never before, and at
the price fixed by the President there
is a good profit in it to every fancier
who will give it the attention it needs.
Good soil preparation’is necessary to
the making of a crop, and this should
not be delayed another day.”
The Department urges that bank
ers and merchants in every communi
ty see to it that every farmer gets
seed wheat and plants it The State

with considerable quantities of home
grown seed. Theb est planting time
is immediately after the first killing
frost which gets rid of the Hessian
fly, the "boll weevil” of wheat. Bul
letins relating to wheat planting and
cultivation will be supplied by the De
partment on request.
It has been brought to the attention
of the Georgia State Bureau of Mar
kets that some mills in Alabama have
gone into the country and made con
tracts for future supplies of velvet
beans at prices entirely too low, con
sidering the food value of velvet bean
meal. In order to arrive at some
idea of a fair valuation of this prod
uct, the Bureau has made careful in-
vestigation and finds that the actual
food value of pure velvet bean meal
is greater than that of cotton seed
meal. This has no reference to its
value as a fertilizer. This test as to
food value shows that in calculating
the protein, carbohydrates and fat
contents the velvet bean meal yields^
160,520 calories to the 100 pounds,
whereas, 7 per cent cotton seed meal
only yields 140,660 calories to the
100 pounds. Itls further shown that
velvet bean meal made from the bean
and the pod mixed yields 139,912
calories to the 100 pounds. This is
practically thes ame as 7 per cent cot
ton seed meal, which is selling right
around $44.00 per ton. It must al
so be borne in mind that the manufac
turing expense on velvet bean meal
is no where near as much as that on
cotton seed meal. The farmers of the
State should figure over this care
fully before entering into future con
tracts for supplying velvet beans.
