Stories of Activities and Conditions Throughout the
United States and on the Battle Fronts,
From Washington, D. C.
The farmer can win this war.
Only by famine does the Kaiser hope
to conquer—famine by force of the sub
marine. If the submarine brings Eng
land and France to their knees, beg
ging bread In the humiliation of de
feat, the Kaiser will then turn upon
the United States.
England ahd France can be saved
from famine by the farmers of the
United States and Canada in spite of
the submarine, if they will. The sub
marine will sink food that England
and France so sorely ndeds but the
submarine can not sink enough to
starve our allies, if the farmer of the
United States will raise maximum
crops, raise every pound and save ev
ery pound of foods he possibly can.
It's a fight, therefore, between the
farmer of the United States on the
one hand and the gaunt wolf of the
Kaiser, famine,'on the other hand.
If the American farmer can raise
enough to allow for the submarine
toll and enough more food'to place
“over there” to feed those who are
fighting, then victory Is ours.
But It’s a narrow margin. The
whole world Is on the verge of star-
ration. If even a normal crop Is pro
duced In this country it Is not going
to afford enough to feed everybody
ration. At best there Is .going to be
lack. The American farmer must
awaken to-a sprlous realization that
this Is no small task. In fact, it Is
only a fighting chance.
If the American farmer will only
realize this, then he must recognize
that every blow he makes must count A*
for the utmost Maximum yields
must be strliren for as never before.
ThlsTs no time to leave anything - .

Gen. Pershing has requested ship
ment of 18,BOO pairs of shoes for
each 26,000 men monthly, which is ap
proximately nine pairs of shoes per
man per year. This quantity Is in ex
cess of actual consumption and is be
ing used to build up a resrve for all
troops in France. When such a sup
ply is accumulated, the quantities per
man-will be reduced.
The Quartermaster General’s De
partment now has on hand and due
on outstanding contracts, 7,664,000
field shoes and 7, 876,000 marching
shoes. It will he necessary to secure
more than a million additional shoes

Learning to Fly
Accidents are Few
Record's of the War Department
show that from the begigmingof
training in. .1$YJ;"tu‘~February'22,
fatalities at military ac
tion fields in this country have been
61; 10 officers and 29 cadets killed
in training flights, and 12 men killed
in unauthorized flights and ground
accidents.
Since the ritaning began in the
United States, student aviators have
flown considerably moro than 100,-
000 miles. Hundreds, of hitherto in-,
experienced men have been learning
to fly. Their early flights are under I
the guidance of instructors, and prior
are spent iji preliminary ground
work. There comes a time, however,
when every student aviator must take
his machine up alone, and every pre
caution has been taken to reduce the
number of accidents and safeguard
the aviator in his solo flights.
Food and Fuel Supplies
Are Short in Many'
European Countries
A Swiss commercial paper states
that there Is a great hsortage in coal
of all kinds, an insufficient supply of
wood for fuel, and small reserves in
oils and greases throughout Switzer
land. Fresh eggs have disappeared
from them arket. Dry vegetables are
becoming mores carce. A project to
manufacture flour from potatoes had
to be abandoned because sufficient
supplies of potatoes could not be se
cured.
