little “House of Hearts” in which they
expect to live after they are married
Judith is an orphan. She has ben liv
ing with “Aunt” Hattie Taylor,
crabbid old spinster who delights in
making up bits of doggeral to sing and
hnnoy the girl. One day Carter over
hears her, and tells her she must stop
bullying Judith. He makes arrange
ments for Judith to live until her mar-
triage in the house of Cynthia Ban
croft, a lovable “maiden lady” who is
Crippled. For a long time Cynthia
Bancroft has exchanged daily greet
ings such as a book ot a jar of jam
with Martin Chandler, another crip
ple living at the other end of town.
Chandler’s philosophy in life is sum
med up in the words: “Whatever ,is
mine I shall have. Nothing that is
truly mine can e taken from me. And
what is not mine I do not want”
Margery Golden comes from the
city to Martin Candler’s house to live
her father having died. Carter is at
tracted to her, and his interest grows
as the dayB slip by. Judith finally
notices the attachment but tries to be
lieve that she is mistaken. Margery
learning of the “House Of Hearts,”
lnakes a sofa cushion and goes to the
little house to leave it there. She
'climbs in by the window, hurting her
finger. Carter is very sympathetic
about the injury. His leelings get the
better of him, and hes weeps the girl
into his arms. Judith comes to pay
a visit to the “House of Hearts” and
unnoticed, sees them. She is left alone
, Mrs. Bussey of Towns, Michigan, is
thb guest of her sister, Mrs. Johnson.

of the little “House of Hearts.” Then

the four people she has brought to
gether. Judith hinds a grim sort of
comfort in Martin Chandler’s philos
ophy: “Whatever is mine I shall
have. Nothing that is truly mine can
bo taken from me. And what is not
mine I do not want.”
