$650 for a Tree.
Edinburg, Ind.—The W. T. Thompson
Veneer company hero has Just bought
from Wabash college at Crawfordsrllle
a walnut tree for which It paid $650.
The tree Is on the campus, which Is
made up In part of naUve forest
growths. Its body will be cut Into air-
plane stock, while the stump will be
made Into veneer for piano cases. W.
T. Thompson, head of the local com
pany, say he regards the tree as the
dnest of Its kind In Indiana.
Navy Department Is Anxious to Per
petuate Memory of En
listed Men.
Washington.—Secretary Daniels Is
anxious to preserve in the nary’s rec
ord photographs of all men of that
branch who hare lost their Uvea In
the service. He la requesting rela
tives and friends to send photographs
to the recruiting division, bureau of
navigation, navy department
The purpose Is to perpetuate the
memory of enlisted men. Officers are
required to provide, photographs and
official pictures are taken of all grad
uates of Annapolis.
At rapidly as photographs of en
listed men are received copies will be
made for the records of the navy de
partment and the originals returned
to the owners. A photograph of each
man will be forwarded by the de
partment to the training station where
he began hla career In the service.
There, a memorial gallery or hero’s
corner will be formed.

U. S. NAVY DISPLAY EXHIBITS
ON CIRCUITS OF STATE FAIRS
| To more thoroughly acquaint peo
ple of the country with the part the
U. S. Navy is taking in the present
war an elaborate exhibit with equip
ment and accoutrements of the serv
ice is to be made this summer at the
larger fairs throughout the Nation.
The display will be made in connec
tion with that of the Joint Commit
tee on Government Exhibits which in
cludes the variobs Departments and
activities of Federal work. Five clr.
cults are to be covered.
The Navy exhibit will comprehen
sively represent each Department of
the service. There w}U be a display
of captured guns while the Ordnance
Department will show the types of
shells, depth charges and other ex
plosives but used against the enemy.
The Bureau of Construction and Re
pair will be represented by valuable,
and unusually interesting models of
types of ships in the U. S. Navy.
These models have been taken from
the halls of the Navy Department in
Washington and it will be the first
time that they have ever been shown
egnrerally throughout the country.
The Bureau of Medicine and Surgery
will show accessories of its work
while the Department of Supplies
and Accounts will put forward the
specimens of heavy clothing provided
for the protectie>v,of American sail
ors during their vigilance at patrol
work against submarines in the North
Sea and on the Atlantic Ocean. For
the Bureau of Navigation which hand
les the Personnel of the Navy the
work of the Recruiting Division will
lie shown by a display of posters.
These are the work of the most fa
mous of American artists who con
tributed these artistic appeals for the
various campaigns in Recruiting the
Navy up to its strength of more than
half a million men.

mer, Chief Bureau of Navigation. Mr.
Charles A. Valentine, thew ell-known
New York architect and the design
er of thee ity’s best sky-scrapers, ~pa
triotically volunteered to Lieutenant
Commander Cooper of the Navy Re
cruiting Bureau, to design the goner-
si architecture of the Navy’a exhib
it at these county affairs. Mr. Valen
tine's chaste and dignified architec
ture gives the' exhibit the proper set
ting befitting a government enter
prise. Two large mural panels, flank
the entrance and represent various
phases of Navy life and of the Marine
Corps. On one'side Mr. Charles B.
Falls, the talented painter, has glorl-
fied the valor of the fighting Marines,
on the other .side Lieutenant Reuter-
dahl has painted, stirring scenes of
the Navy at war.
The exhibit! will be shown at the
following fairs in this section:
Nashville, Tenn., September 16 to
21; Memphis, Tenn., September 21 to
28; Knoxville, Tenn., Octobor 7 to
12; Atlanta, Ga., October 14 to 19;
Macon, Ga., October SO to November
Jacksonville, Fla., November 27
to December 6.
