WILLIAM J. HARRIS A MAN
OF MUCH EXPERIENCE
Atlanta, Ga.—William J. Harris,
Georgia’s new United States Senator
who will be sworn in on March 4th,
next, was never in'his life in too
great a harry to stop and shake hands
with a man he knew. He was never
too busy to do a favor for a friend
when opportunity offered. He was
never so engrossed in his own affairs
that ho forgot to show his apprecia
tion of afavor. He is as simple and
democratic in his manner as the plain
est constituent could demand. There
is not a streak of animus in his make
up. He can make a fight and make it
hard, if necessity requires—as abund
antly proven in his recent campaign.
But he has never gone out looking
for a fight. Hia experience and train
ing for the Senate have been excep
tional. First aa secretary to the late
Senator A. S. Clay, then as director

AMERICANS RESPOND NOBLY
TO U. S. FOOD ADMINISTRATOR
The following statement has been
issued by Senator William M. Calder
of New York.
It is my belief that no.one govern
mental department, up to the present
has donem ore to win the war than
the Food Administration. Its meth
ods of regulating the nation’s food
supply have so won the confidence of
the people that hey comply willingly
with . every conservation suggestion
made necessary by war time demands
upon us.
The remarkable fact is that the
stream of food has been kept constant
ly moving across the Atlantic to our
Army and the Allies without hard
ship to our people or dislocation of
American business. Instead of elab
orate systems of compulsory ration
ing, such as have been enforced in
all European belligerant countries,
“T HAVE used Dr. Caldwell’s Syrup
A Pepsin and find it a most effective
and pleasant laxative—one that is worth recom
mending to one’s friends. I know that my
health has been greatly improved since
using it.”

Herbert Hoover has been justified in
the belief he has always held that the
great majority of the people heeded
only to be told what was necessary to
do to win the war, and that they
would do it voluntarily and without
question.
The food Administration has been
sueeessfnl in eliminating hoarding
and speculation, stabilizing prices
and winning the cooperation of the
business men of thee ountry. These
men have attended conferences with
Food administration officials at Wash

situation was explained to them have

raking him up one side and down the
other, after the manner of candidates
in heated campaigns, and paying their
respects to various inidviduals con
nected with the Harris campaign, ev
eryone of them took particular pains
to say that he regarded Dr. Dedbetter
as a high-toned Christian gentleman.
Of course this is not meant to convey
the inference, by any, manner
meads, that all of the gentlemen
connected with the Harris campaign
were any other kind except high-ton
ed but it simply goes to show that ev
ery contestant took off his hat, so to
speak to Dr. Ledbetter. It is a fine
thing to be able to make a hard fight
in politics and have your opponents
throw bouquets at you.

any large city of the country could
fail to realize how whole-heartedly
the great majority of the food mer

Not all of us can go to the front.
Only a few, relatively can feel the
