JONES WITHDRAWS WATSON’S
CONTEST AT CONVENTION
Atlanta, Ga.—After having enter-
ed contests on his defeat in the retent
primary for congressman from the
Tenth pistrict, Thomas E. Watson
sought to secure from the state con*
vention at Macon a reversal of the ac
tion of the county and district refus
als to recognize his right to the con
test the election, the result being
! that the temper of the convention,
which met in Macon a few days ago,
which was so plainly inimical to his
position, forced the withdrawal of the
contest by Watson's representative,
J. Gordon Jones, of Cordele.
The tilt which occurred when
egort was made to enter the appeal
before the convention was the live
liest feature of the meeting which
otherwise was of routine interest on
ly. In order to allow the matter to
come before the convention it was nec
essary to amend the rules governing
the meeting; and, this being done, W.
H. Burwell, of Sparta, made a strong
argument against Watson's appeal.
Following that Mr. Jones rose
speak but was hissed by the conven
tion. He insisted on his right of rec
ognition as a member of the conven
tion, however; but after paying trib
ute to Watson's intellect and writings,
withdrew the contest.

PROPER TREATMENT FOR OAT SMUT
Atlanta, Qa., August.—(Special.)—
iThe loose smut of oats which is coro-
imon in Georgia may cause a great deal
lot damage to the oat crop under fa-
jvorable weather conditions. In some
josses the loss from this disease may
:be from 10 per cent to 20 per cent.
Since it is so easy to control, there
;Js no excuse for planting untreated
tseed and runing the risk of having dis
eased oats.
Formaldehyde Treatment
Take bne pint of commercial for
maldehyde to 30 gallons of water;
place the seed in heaps on a tight
floor and sprinkle thoroughly with this
solution as the seed are shoveled back
and forth so as to wet every grain;
cover the pile with sacks soaked in
the solution and leave for two or three
hours and then spread out to dry.
Caution: The seed should not be
left in pilej too Jong, or the germi
nating qualities of the seed may be
injured. If the seed is to be sown
by hand broadcast, it may be sown
at once before allowing to dry. As
even after drying the seeds are swollen
somewhat, it is best to set the ma
chine so as to plant enough more seed
to make up for this swelled condition
of the grain.
Treatment of Seed Wheat
It is a good plan to treat all seed
wheat with formaldehyde solution be
fore planting it, as this will destroy
the spores causing the stinking smut
of wheat. In treating wheat, how
ever, use only one pint of formalde
hyde to 40 gallons of water; otherwise
the method of treatment in the same
as for oats.
NO LOTTERY WITH W. S. S.
Atlanta, Ga.—Warning has been
sent out from Washington that War
Savings Stampus may not be used in
connection with lotteries, Racling or
gaming devices of any kind and agents
of the War Savings Committee have
been notified that such use of the
stamps must be promptly stopped
whenever noted.
Legitimate sales of War Savings
Stamps are being strongly urged and
a recent telegram from Secretary
McAdoo of the Treasury Department,
shows the importance that he attach
es to the successful prosecution of the
campaign for the sale of stamps. He
says: '
Far from suggesting any diminu
tion of the activities of the War Sav
ings Organization, it is the intenton
of the Treasury Department to en-
arge these actvitics.
