ECHOES FROM THE SOUTH
i Why cannot the American Allied
. Army which is fighting in the world
[ war and has so successfully mastered
j each, task set before it make names
j for itself that will go down In history?
| Why should the boys of the Na-
| tional or Regular . Army be called
"Yankees,” when the name rightfully
belongs to only a portion of them?
Why shouldn't the boys be called
“Sammies” for our own beloved Un
cle Sam?” Are they not truly his
children? Since the world began
children have always borne the name
of their father.
Why change the order or custom of
the ages and permit our American
boys to take the name of their big
brother "Yank?” Who years ago
licked his smaller brother for reasons
long since settled.
jtnd why? Tell me, pray, is the
big brother “Yank” more dignified
than “Father Sam” or “Uncle Tom
my?”
And I would like to know* why our
dear khaki clad boys, who love their
brown uniform and whom we love in
them should not be called “Brownies”
for the uniform they wear themselves
rather than “Doughboys" from the
big brass buttoned uniform* worn by
his big brother “Yank” in the war be
tween the states?

Editor the Journal, Atlanta, Ga.
Dear Sir: It seems that after a
year of trying to decide on a suitable
name tor our boys in France, that
“Yankee” has finally been accepted
as a very fitting one.
As one editor
wrote, the quick-witted, upstanding,
alert, resourceful, good-natured, for-
ward-going, charging, riproaring, dev-
il-takc-thc-hindmost Yankee soldier,
is the man who will win the war. All
the poetry is dedicated to the Yankee
soldier, the Yankee is given credit
for producing skilled labor, . buying
onds, for fast thinking, thrift and in
fact every song of praise goes to the
Yankee soldier.
Now no doubt the Yankee soldier
is supposed to mean the American
army; if so, Lwould like to know why
we read in big head-lines that the
Yanks have captured a town or two,
and on reading through the same ar
ticle you will be told that southern
troops participated in this attack.

and being a southernor I do not un
derstand why.
Could we not give a name to our
boys which would mean as much to
one as to the other, and a name that
has never stood for anything before?

writing of this, but from a recent trip
north I do know that the people there
are very much tickled over the new
name. Why not unite our boys in this
great cause by giving them an entire
ly new title—one that has not been
used before.
